Five of the best balms for chapped lips

Five of the best balms for chapped lips

At this time of year, we all love to break out the reds, the plums and the burgundy lipsticks, so we need our lips to behave themselves. Cold temperatures and the heating on full blast is a bad combination and before you know it lips are chapped and sensitive and the dark colours are off-limits. To keep your lips in tip-top shape and prepped for those Valentine’s inspired looks here’s our pick of the five best lip balms;

The Classic

Personally, I can’t live without 8 Hour Cream. A multi-purpose balm that can be used anywhere it’s fantastic on the lips. Greasy but lovely it really feels like a barrier to the outside world, so especially great applied before heading out in the cold. Most often sold in a squeezy tube (these last forever) I always pick up the small tins at the airport as they are great tucked into coat pockets. Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream:€34

The Luxe Option

If you’re feeling a little more spendy why not try Jo Malone’s Vitamin E Lip Conditioner? Not always hailed one of her hero products- it’s often placed at the till in store, you may not even know this exists. This balm feels luxurious, with a thick, buttery texture and gorgeous smell, it’s a real treat. The Vitamin E and honey it contains are both restorative and soothing on the lips. Also, the chic monochrome packaging is just another excuse to get it out and reapply, slightly more grown-up than a Chapstick. Jo Malone Vitamin E Lip Conditioner:€30

The Budget Buy

If, like myself, you are the queen of losing lip balm you might just want a cheap and cheerful option that you won’t mind replacing. For this, we recommend Burt’s Bees. The wind-up tube is easy to bring with you and apply anywhere. The texture is thinner than others but no less hydrating. This makes it great applied under lipstick as it isn’t so greasy that makeup will slide off. They come in a variety of flavours, but I’ll always return to the classic peppermint, I just love that tingly feeling. Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm:€4.99

The Sensitive One

For ultimate cool girl kudos pick up a Glossier Balm Dot Com. They come in a variety of scents (my personal favourite is Birthday Balm as it literally smells like birthday cake) but for sensitive skin try their Original Balm. This one has no fragrance and is hypo-allergenic. The packaging is ultra cute, and one of their top beauty hacks is to hole punch the top and hang off your keys. Voila- never be without lip balm again! Glossier Balm Dot Com: €12

Our Top Pick

Nuxe Reve De Miel is a cult classic amongst skin care enthusiasts. A super rich and thick texture, this works amazingly when applied before bed. Wake up with a brand new pout ready for whatever lip look you’re into. Slightly pricier than some, a little goes a long way, and trust us once you’ve tried this you’ll be hooked. Nuxe de Miel Lip Balm:€12

One Last Lip Tip

If your lips are in need of some real TLC or you just need them to be ultra prepped before applying a matte lip we would recommend a lip scrub first. You can use an old toothbrush (be gentle!) or LUSH sells a variety of different flavoured (yes they are edible) lip scrubs. Use one of these first and then pat on your balm of choice, goodbye chapped lips!
