Owner Of Urban Health Dee Buckley’s Wellness Rules

Beginning 2018 on a healthier note is less challenging when you have the right advice. ORLA NELIGAN meets the health and wellbeing pros who share their knowledge and wisdom to support, educate and empower you to pursue a healthy new year.

Dee Buckley, owner of Urban Health

“Yoga has always been about general wellbeing in all aspects of my life,” says former model and ballet dancer Dee Buckley who, together with her husband Darragh, own Urban Health, Urban Yoga and Urban Space in Ranelagh, Dublin. Initially, it was a way of keeping fit, but it fast became a way of life and consequently a business. “It was always a dream of mine to open a business that combined healthy food with wellness and yoga.” Dee runs a full timetable of yoga and Pilates classes seven days a week from the Urban Space studio upstairs, while providing healthy salads, wraps, juices and treats from the cafe? downstairs. “Yoga is so much more than physical postures. It has given me more energy, patience, less stress, pain relief, and general better health.”

HAVE FUN

The most important thing is to enjoy what you’re doing. There are so many di erent styles of yoga classes – find the one that suits you best and enjoy it.

SLOW IT DOWN

I see students move too quickly into poses, lose their balance and fall out. Slowing the movement down and focusing on the breath helps to focus the mind and create greater control.

WELLNESS PHILOSOPHY:  LIVE, LAUGH, LOVE – LIVE LIFE TO THE FULLEST, LAUGH OUT LOUD, AND SHOW COMPASSION TO OTHERS AND ANIMALS.

USE YOUR BREATH

Slowing down breathing has a calming effect on the mind and body, making it easier to move in and out of postures.

FOCUS ON ALIGNMENT

Yoga postures can be dangerous and lead to injury if not done correctly. Listen to a teacher’s instructions. You should never feel pain in any posture, so if you do, come straight out.

ONLY PUSH YOURSELF TO 90 PERCENT OF YOUR CAPACITY

If you’re like me and not naturally flexible, the tendency can be to push yourself too hard and overstretch, leading to injuries. Pull back a little and let it happen at a more realistic pace. The more relaxed you are in a posture, the more relaxed your muscles will become, allowing them to lengthen naturally.
