From making a lace skirt more casual with a pair of slim-soled flats to dressing your favourite adidas trackies up with a blazer and a metallic shoe, mixing high-low fashion has never been more in vogue – and trainers are the key to perfecting the look. Below, we've rounded up the top five trainer trends to keep on your fashion radar this year.
Silver metallic
We’ve seen metallic in all iterations from statement jewellery to shimmery pants but this year, it’s shiny shoes that everyone’s lusting over. No longer just for party season (or going out-out), silver trainers have a certain je ne sais quoi about them – casual enough for day-to-day while still being polished, they add just the right amount of sparkle to an outfit. For a lesson in how to style them, take a leaf out of Jess Jepson-Newby’s book and pair with dark wash jeans, your favourite knit and an oversized leather jacket.
Animal print
The internet’s obsession with the Mob Wife aesthetic might be over, but animal print isn’t going anywhere. Leopard print remains a clear favourite though cow print is hot on its heels, followed closely by zebra stripes and snake skin.
Thin sole
Last year it was adidas Sambas that reigned supreme, this year fashion experts predict that Puma Speedcats will be the favourite. Easily recognisable by their thin sole and bright red colourway, the style is indicative of a greater trend within the trainer world; barely there footwear. Chunky Fila clompers and dad sneakers have been replaced by a narrower, more compact shoe. Even the major design houses have gotten on board – Miu Miu’s SS24 collection featured a flat-footed collaboration with New Balance that catapulted its way right to the top of fashion lovers’ wishlists the world over (mine included).
Gorpcore
If you haven’t heard of gorpcore, it’s time to familiarise yourself with the trend as it’s going to be huge once again this year. Essentially when functional outdoor wear is worn in an urban or fashionable way, the aesthetic is synonymous with brands like Salomon, The North Face and Patagonia. When looking for footwear that fits the bill, keep an eye out for chunky soles and technical fabrics like Gore-tex (great for Irish weather).
Suede
Suede jackets surged in popularity toward the latter end of 2024 and now suede trainers are having their moment in the spotlight. Luxurious while still practical (though suede protectant is a must), they’re the perfect style to dress an outfit up or down while never compromising on comfort.
