How to approach wrapping a Christmas gift that doesn’t have a regular shape? We’ve asked stylist Orla Neligan for her nifty tips.

Wrapping seems to be something we all either love or loathe – and if you loathe it, nothing can stress you out more than trying to tackle a gift that has an irregular shape. Perhaps it’s wider on one side than the other, or is soft rather than having straight edges to work with.

That’s why we’ve asked stylist Orla Neligan for some ideas on how to wrap tricky gifts such as these – read on to find her step-by-step guide below. We also asked for her expert ideas on making our homes feel festive this season.

First of all, she’s a fan of fresh greenery. “I love a touch of natural greenery around the house any time of year but especially at Christmas. The great thing about it is that it’s free, and tends to last for several weeks without looking too tired. You’ll find eucalyptus, fir, pine, ivy and other evergreen plants everywhere at the moment which look great bunched in vases or as a garland along a table or mantel.”

Another trick is to use Christmas decorations but in unexpected ways. “Baubles look great on a tree, but also work well piled in a bowl or urn as a table centrepiece, on a console or even dotted along a garland elevating your table. Similarly, wreaths are synonymous with front door décor, but they also look great hanging in windows, on cabinets, as a centrepiece or even over mirrors to help break up a space and add some visual interest.”

And for last-minute flourishes, she recommends adding something metallic to a room – “a simple gold tray is a stylist’s secret weapon filled with candles, baubles and greenery”; adding ribbon to just about anything, and making sure you have plenty of twinkling lights.

For those tricky gifts, Orla shows us how to wrap a bag, but you can apply this technique to many different items.

  1. Place your bag on the paper and cut it so it allows a little excess on each side and at the top. Remove the present and secure the middle with tape.
  2. Press the paper down to create creased edges.
  3. Fold up the bottom to create a crease, then open it up and fold in the edges, flatten and then fold down the top and bottom pieces and secure with tape. You should have a box-like shape as the bottom of your present.
  4. Insert the bag from the top opening.
  5. Using small folds, fold down the top twice and using a paper puncher, punch a hole in the folded piece.
  6. String ribbon through the holes and tie in a bow.

Toblerone Truffles are individually wrapped, diamond-shaped bites of the iconic Toblerone crunchy nougat pieces in soft praline texture, coated with Toblerone Swiss quality chocolate – the perfect addition to any Christmas gift. This Christmas, whatever you gift, add a diamond.
