This clever app tracks your home energy usage

Want to make greener choices but not sure where to start? Pinergy helps consumers with an updated, energy-usage chart straight to their phone.

Are you tracking your fitness stats and social media traction? Of course, you are. So why aren’t you tracking your home energy usage? With Pinergy, you get an app that shows your data every 30 minutes to help you make smarter energy consumption decisions.

“At Pinergy we believe in change and that everyone has a part to play in creating a sustainable energy future,” explains David Slattery, Head of Marketing & Communications. “Our goal is to translate our deep understanding of the global energy sector into practical, tailored advice to help consumers optimise their energy use, reduce waste and treat energy as a resource, not a commodity.”

Supply, analyse and advise

With many traditional energy suppliers, the customer only has a monthly bill or statement to go on, and very little insight into how or where the charges came from. This is not the case with Pinergy. “For our home customers,” David continues, “we have an award-winning app that gives you a detailed breakdown of your energy use, every 30 minutes.” So, as a consumer, you can quickly see when your household uses the hydro sources), but what makes us unique is that we also help you to analyse how you are using this electricity in your home or business.”

Compare and adjust

The Pinergy app is fantastic for residential customers, while business customers can access their data on a portal which allows them to visualise their consumption across their premises. “So, you can easily compare your premises with other premises and see which is doing better. Our business customers also enjoy innovative pricing solutions,” says David.

Your energy future

Pinergy will also work with you as a customer to plan your energy future. “By understanding your consumption patterns, we can help you to identify areas with the most and least electricity and at what cost per unit, so you can instantly start to adjust your schedules and habits to make more energy-efficient changes.

“At Pinergy, our key offering is our ‘Supply, Analyse & Advise’ proposition. Like some other suppliers, we supply only certified clean, renewable energy (generated from wind and solar and for improvement). These changes can include selecting an energy plan to suit your lifestyle, whether you work from home, or if your home is busiest in the evening when the full family returns.” Pinergy also provides solar energy or solar panels that can generate electricity 365 days a year for your property or commercial electric vehicle (EV) charging solutions.

Let’s all be more energy-aware

“We estimate that between 15 and 20 per cent of energy is wasted in homes and businesses every year,” states David. “Habits such as leaving lights or appliances on can be obvious, but there can be unseen energy vampires at play too. The visualisation of energy consumption that we offer really helps our customers to correct bad habits.”

Last year, Pinergy Home customers reduced their consumption by seven per cent, on average. “Typically, we see about a third of customers who switch to Pinergy reduce their consumption (and hence costs) by at least 20 per cent in their first year with us.”

What about solar energy?

With the recent volatility in energy pricing, many homeowners have chosen to invest in solar energy to build a level of independence from the main electricity grid. The benefits of solar energy for the homeowner include:

  •     Generating free electricity 365 days a year (cloudy days still count)
  •     Incentives such as zero VAT on installations since May 2023
  •     Generous SEAI grants up to €2,400
  •     No planning permission required

“We really believe that there has never been a better time to install solar in your home,” says David. “Our team will visit your home and design an installation for your unique needs.”

What is green energy?

Renewable energy is energy (usually electricity) created from renewable sources such as wind, solar or hydropower. These sources are naturally replenished and do not use carbon or fossil fuels to generate electricity. Carbon or fossil fuels are strongly linked to causing the climate crisis.

Green energy or renewable energy is supplied to ALL Pinergy customers in accordance with the Commission for Regulation of Utilities verification process. The Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) and the Single Electricity Market Operator (SEMO) carry out an annual verification process of suppliers’ green source products to validate their 100% renewable credibility. This confirms that a customer of such a product is using electricity sourced entirely from renewable generation.

A Guarantee of Origin (GO) or Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin (REGO) certificate certifies that electricity generated is from renewable energy sources. GOs and REGOs are traded at a European level. Suppliers can purchase GOs to use as proof of the share or quantity of energy from renewable sources. The SEMO confirms to the supplier the percentage of their green source product demand met from renewable generation, GOs and REGOs.

Common energy myths debunked

  • Contrary to popular belief, solar panels do not require direct sunshine, just daylight. Of course, those sunny days will produce optimal energy but the panels work all year around.
  • Running on caffeine to get through those busy days? Only filling your kettle to the number of cups you need to make will actually save you money on energy usage.
  • Working from home and can’t remember the last time you plugged out your laptop or monitor? Now might be the time to start paying attention. Devices left in standby mode or overnight charging are still using energy even when not in use. So, give yourself, your laptop and your energy bill a break overnight.
