2026 Micro-Wins: Sustainable changes anyone can make that will actually make an impact
As the new year begins, Jo Linehan walks us through small, actionable wins that can lead to meaningful, sustainable change throughout the year.
When it comes to the new year, nobody wants to get bogged down in unrealistic goals or expectations. But as we all try to do our bit for the planet, there are small, achievable ways we can make a difference.
These micro-wins fall under a mantra that is particularly loved at Pinergy: “Just enough is enough.” Because lots of little wins can add up to a big impact.
Ditch the spam
According to a study by the online proxy platform Proxyrack, a staggering 5.8 billion spam emails are sent daily.
When these spam or unwanted emails arrive in our inboxes, we don’t think much of them. However, not only can they clog up our devices, take up valuable space on our hard drives, and drain our phones’ and laptops’ batteries, but they have a carbon impact, too.
By simply unsubscribing from unwanted newsletters and emails, we can reduce our digital footprint, save space and energy, and limit unnecessary wear and tear on our tech. Simple.
Donate for good
At this time of year, our homes can feel stuffed full of things we no longer want or need. Thankfully, there are lots of Irish charities that will happily take items from you and put them to good use.
Unwanted duvets, pillows and blankets can be donated to Dog’s Trust and other animal shelters, while charities like Barnardos and thetoylibrary.ie love to receive unwanted children’s toys. Save up used batteries and drop them into a WEEE Ireland blue box (found in supermarkets and at your local recycling centre). The money generated from these batteries is donated to LauraLynn, Ireland’s only children’s hospice.
By passing on our pre-loved items, we can contribute to circularity, reduce waste, and support social initiatives in our communities.
Support local
It might sound obvious, but choosing to support Irish businesses this year is a major win. According to the ISME Shop Local Report 2020, every €10 spent locally on Irish products generates more than €40 in employment benefits for the local community.
Hundreds of Irish businesses are doing important work in sustainability. Take Coffeeangel, for example. Over the next five years, the coffee shop chain has committed to investing 5% of its profits into biodiversity credits, which will be spent rewilding parts of Dunsany Estate in Co Meath. The first year of the deal will remove and store a minimum of 80,000 kg of carbon from the atmosphere at Dunsany.
Not only that, but Coffeeangel, along with other businesses such as craft beer maker River Rye Brewery, the four-star hotel Inchydoney Island, and even Christchurch Cathedral, Dublin, are all powered by 100% renewable energy from Pinergy.
By supporting local, you can support businesses, communities and the energy transition.
Power up
So many things can feel out of our control, especially when it comes to our environmental impact. But did you know that each of us has the power to take back control of our energy bills?
For many of us, our monthly energy bills have been a mystery, leaving us unsure about where our energy comes from or why some months have higher energy costs than others.
Thanks to Pinergy’s app, this can be your year to become energy literate. You can track and trace your spending, compare it against other households, and understand precisely how you use energy day to day, week to week and month to month. Once you know how and when you’re using energy, you can start to make clever tweaks and changes to your habits to reduce your costs over time.
Once we know where our impact lies, we can start to change it. Pinergy believes in the power of transparency when it comes to energy. After all, it should be up to us to decide what kind of energy we use in our homes and how and when we use it.
Make the switch, download the Pinergy app and see how understanding and curating your energy use can reduce your bills, lower your home’s environmental footprint and empower you to make even more sustainable changes in your day-to-day life.
