14th Oct 2024

From a new series starring Irish actors Victoria Smurfit and Aidan Turner to Anna Kendrick's directorial debut and a Netflix series about the Sweet Bobby podcast, here's what to watch this week.

MONDAY

Disclaimer, Apple TV+

Disclaimer is a gripping psychological thriller in seven chapters, starring Academy Award winners Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline. Based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Renée Knight, the story centres on acclaimed journalist Catherine Ravenscroft (Blanchett) who built her reputation by revealing the misdeeds and transgressions of others. When she receives a novel from an unknown author, she is horrified to realise she is now the main character in a story that exposes her darkest secrets. As Catherine races to uncover the writer’s true identity, she is forced to confront her past before it destroys her life and her relationships with her husband Robert (Sacha Baron Cohen) and their son Nicholas (Kodi Smit-McPhee).

TUESDAY

Black Widow, Sky Documentaries/NOW TV

A tale steeped in mystery and deception, Black Widow tells the story of how three male victims were deceived, defrauded, and abused by Dena Thompson – also known as The Black Widow – before she was finally caught and sent to prison in 2003. Following Dena’s release in 2022, her victims, as well as the police officers involved in the case, have decided to tell their cautionary tale about one of the worst cases of abuse and coercive control in British history.

WEDNESDAY

Sweet Bobby: My Catfish Nightmare, Netflix

After an online friendship blossoms into true love, Kirat finds herself turning detective to uncover the truth behind her mysterious fiancé, Bobby. Inspired by the hit podcast, Sweet Bobby is the story of a fairytale romance gone horribly wrong.

THURSDAY

Shrinking Season 2, Apple TV+

Shrinking follows a grieving therapist who starts to break the rules and tell his clients exactly what he thinks. Ignoring his training and ethics, he finds himself making huge, tumultuous changes to people’s lives… including his own. Harrison Ford and Jason Segel star.

FRIDAY

Rivals, Disney+

Set against the backdrop of the drama, excess, and shocking antics of the power-grabbing social elite of 1980s England, Rivals delves headfirst into the ruthless world of independent television in 1986. The original eight-part blockbuster saga is based on the iconic novel by Dame Jilly Cooper, which is part of her Rutshire Chronicles series packed full of romantic entanglements, dastardly deals, sex and wit.

SATURDAY

The Catfishing of Tegan and Sara, Disney+

Tegan and Sara ascended to global fame as one of the most influential queer indie rock bands of their generation. They worked hard to cultivate an inclusive and passionate fanbase around the world. Listeners were drawn to the duo’s beautifully confessional lyrics, but there was more than just the music. Fans found within the community the only safe space to come out and be queer during a time when few bands would declare allyship, let alone celebrate their own queer identity. But a bad actor took advantage of the community’s trust and comfort. Tegan and Sara’s world turned upside down when Tegan’s personal files were hacked in 2011, revealing the dark side of fame and fandom.

SUNDAY

Woman Of The Hour, Netflix

Anna Kendrick stars in her directorial debut, Woman of the Hour, the stranger-than-fiction story of an aspiring actress in 1970s Los Angeles and a serial killer in the midst of a yearslong murder spree, whose lives intersect when they’re cast on an episode of The Dating Game.
