Orla Neligan shares the best tips for how to organise your under-the-stairs area

Create calm from the chaos of coats, shoes, and bags with this step-by-step guide.

One of the areas in our homes that attracts clutter like no other, it’s easy for the area under the stairs to become a dumping ground.

Whether yours is enclosed behind a cupboard or open, creating some order in this space will not only make that rush out the door easier (no more fruitless searching for your scarf), but will allow you to make full use of the available storage space.

You could even give each family member their own section, whether that’s a hook for coats or a shelf for shoes, creating a system that’s easy for everyone to stick to.

Decluttering expert Orla Neligan has shared her strategy for tackling this tricky space.

under the stairs

1. This often awkward area can get messy quickly so you need to be savvy about how to use and clean the space. A neat shoe storage bench that sits against the wall saves space and keeps loose shoes off the ground.

2. Wall hooks are a great way to utilise all the space you have whether for hanging hats and bags or a dustpan and brush.

3. Stacking storage boxes on top of each other utilises space effectively and lids help keep the dust out.

4. A peg rail with a shelf keeps coats off the floor and the shelf above gives more space for storage or to display anything decorative.

Handy tip: Consider modular units that fit neatly into the awkward sloping shape.

Dyson V12 Detect Slim

under the stairs

Ideal for getting into even the most awkward spaces, the Dyson V12 Detect Slim is Dyson’s most powerful, lightweight cordless vacuum.

It illuminates the particles you can’t see, so even in dark corners you won’t miss a thing, and its Motorbar™ cleaner head provides edge-to-edge deep cleaning with de-tangling technology.

The handy single-button power control means it’s easy to switch hands as you go, as you don’t have to hold in a trigger button, while a sensor continuously sizes and counts dust particles to automatically increase suction power when needed.
