‘I don’t want a mummy wagon like those I see my peers driving’

IMAGE editorial director Dominique McMullan tries out the ultimate 'mum car' – the DS 4 hatchback. With plenty of storage, plush interiors, convenient tech and top-notch safety, it's an all-around glam but practical choice for parents.

There are some cars that just make you feel good, and from the first moment I sit in the DS 4 in my driveway, I feel just that. The premium family hatchback exudes comfort and style, while still managing to transport my two young kids and me effortlessly for the week.

I’m still adjusting to ‘mum life’, but I decidedly do not want a ‘mummy wagon’ like those I see so many of my peers driving to the creche gates. Instead, I want a car that looks good while doing its job, and one that manages to instil in me a certain je ne sais quoi when I’m driving to host events or attend press launches. Well, I need look no further. The DS 4 is an unarguably good-looking car and being French, it has that je ne sais quoi in spades.

With its striking proportions, the DS 4 manages to be a hatchback that fits everything you need for toddler life (including two car seats, a pram, two bags of toys and lots of nappies), and working mum life (glam kit, dry cleaned dress and two camera lights). I am impressed. Dare I say, it even looks quite sexy in my driveway.

One of the most impressive features that catches my eye from the get-go is the pop-out door handles that materialise on unlock. When retracted the handles give the car a sleek visual appeal, and there’s something extremely satisfying about watching them emerge from the flush surface.

The lush interior has everything you would expect from a premium car, the air vents are even tucked out of the eyeline, making everything feel plush and minimal. The touch screen has useful configuration options for making your life easier, responds quickly and displays a charming animation on start.

When driving I feel cocooned and safe, deep within the car. My toddler is impressed with the accelerator and when giving it a bit of welly on the motorway, remarks that we are going faster than “a cheetah with boosters”. The DS 4 dimensions mean it’s easy to get around town too. When nipping into Dublin, I notice that all-around parking cameras make it easy to stop in even the tightest spaces.

So the final verdict? This sophisticated car provides substance and style for a soothing and relaxing ride. And I know one little boy that will be devastated to give our cheetah boosters back.

Introducing the DS 4 – where French luxury expertise and augmented technology meet. It’s all in the design details and innovative tech. Visit dsautomobiles.ie for more information. Prices start from €36,300.
