Perhaps the most profound of all was The Easter Rising of 1916, when fighting broke out on St Stephen’s Green, steps from the hotel. The Shelbourne’s renowned Afternoon Tea went ahead as planned and all seemed well until a stray bullet flew through a window and barely ruffled the millinery roses of a lucky lady’s bonnet.
