Presidential election: the latest opinion poll shows how each candidate ranks

With just two days to go until the Irish presidential election, it seems most people have already made up their mind as to who they’re going to vote for.

On Friday 26th October, the Irish electorate will be asked to choose between Michael D. Higgins, Seán Gallagher, Peter Casey, Gavin Duffy, Joan Freeman, and Liadh Ní Riada.

Learn more about the six candidates here

The latest opinion poll, which was conducted by the Sunday Business Post, suggests our current President Michael D. Higgins, holds a significant lead over his five competitors.

The RED C poll surveyed 1,000 voters from Thursday 11th October to Wednesday 17th October, and it indicates Higgins has 68% of the public’s support. Then there is a substantial drop, as Seán Gallagher is on 12%, followed by Liadh Ní Riada on 9%.

Lower still, Joan Freeman garnered just 6% of the public’s support in the poll; followed by Gavin Duffy and Peter Casey, who received 3% and 2% respectively.

Of course, these types of opinion polls are only indicative. Anything could happen (and everything could change) by the time voting closes on Friday.

The Irish presidential election 2018 will take place on Friday, 26th October, between 7 am and 10 pm at all usual polling stations. To check if you’re eligible to vote, see the electoral register here
