Martin Scorsese made a short film about his lockdown experience — and it’s on BBC2 tonight

Oscar-winning film director Martin Scorsese self-shot a short film for BBC2

The last episode of Mary Beard’s Lockdown Culture airs on BBC2 tonight and viewers are in for a treat.

The British scholar and host has convinced Oscar-winning film director Martin Scorsese to self-shoot a short film about his experience of isolation from his New York home, and it will be ‘premiered’ as part of tonight’s episode.

“What I look forward to in the future is carrying with me what I have been forced to learn in these circumstances,” said Scorsese of his lockdown experience. “It is the essential. The people you love. Being able to take care of them and be with them as much as you can.”

“Martin Scorsese makes a wonderful end to the series,” says Beard. “We see him at home, thinking about lockdown through the lens of classic movies, like Hitchcock’s The Wrong Man.

“But what’s really clever is that this great Hollywood luminary also gets us to look at Hitchcock again afresh through the lens of our current predicament. I was absolutely over the moon when he agreed to do it for us.

“It feels a bit like hosting a little premiere. And it all contributes to a pretty amazing finale.”

The final episode of Lockdown Culture examines “the links between risk, culture and creativity”.

Director Lee Daniels explains why he thinks the current shutdown in Hollywood could be a radical creative opportunity for filmmakers, and photographer Don McCullin questions the worth of a career spent risking his own life to alert the world to the suffering of warfare.

Elsewhere, comedian and ‘Guilty Feminist’ Deborah Frances-White joins Mary and David Spiegelhalter, Professor of the Public Understanding of Risk, to disentangle the complexities of emerging into life after lockdown.

Watch it on BBC2 at 7pm this evening.
