Disney+ unveils display of the house from Home Alone made totally of gingerbread

The festive creation took over 300 hours to complete

The Disney+ streaming service saved families all over the world from total despair during lockdown this year, when kids and adults alike could switch off and enjoy the timeless classics safely from their sitting rooms. There’s no doubt that we’ll be relying on Disney+ for even longer this year, as Christmas looms and we begin making our binge-watching lists for our time off. And top of our list? Home Alone, as always.

There’s so much about the Home Alone movies that are timeless – first hitting cinemas in 1990, the films have remained firm favourites all over the world at this time of year. Now in 2020, Disney+ is the only streaming service that plays the beloved slapstick comedy, and this year, they’ve decided to show the McAllister family a little extra love.

Earlier this month, the streaming platform commissioned award-winning food artist and sculptor Michelle Wibowo to recreate the iconic Chicago mansion (which, in real life, is a popular photo op for lovers of the films) that Kevin spends his Christmas in, entirely of gingerbread.

In a project which involved over 300 hours of baking and sculpting, Wibowo unveiled an amazing 5-ft tall creation, including 63 trees, 33 windows, 14 pizza boxes, and six lampposts. The UK-based artist incorporated an incredible amount of detail into the recreation, including characters and references to iconic scenes from the film.

The Oh-Kay plumbing van that Harry and Marv drove, the Little Nero’s pizza delivery car, and Kevin himself (after falling off his sleigh) can all be found if you look closely enough.

“I jumped at the chance because it is one of my favorite Christmas movies,” Wibowo told the Evening Standard of Home Alone. “It doesn’t really feel like Christmas in our house until we have seen it at least twice.”

Wibowo’s Home Alone gingerbread model is currently on display at the Oak Centre for Children and Young People at The Royal Marsden in Surrey for paediatric patients and their loved ones to enjoy.
