Nifty shades of grey

The striking Abbey Foundation tiles are by Fired Earth. The oak dining room table was made by Thomas Kelly of Bevel Furniture and the chairs are collected antiques. The floor light is Arco by Flos.

When Clare and Kevin Parsons arrived at the site of their renovated redbrick, paint pots and rollers in hand, they knew they wanted to decorate their home in hues that both complemented their impressive art collection, and suited a busy family home.

Artwork means a great deal to the couple. They used to buy each other paintings for Christmas – often from the Cadogan Gallery in London – and over the years have amassed a collection that includes pieces by Emma McClure, Charles Williams and Deborah Tarr. Now these pieces sit within a collection of rich, warm and subtle grey tones that make the most of the light in the renovated Victorian house.

In a way, Clare says, it’s the moment that the pictures are finally hung on the wall that the house becomes a home. ?It becomes your own.?

The couple searched for two years yet before finding the house that was to become their home, and they faced an unanticipated challenge. ?It was a strange situation,? Clare explains. ?It was very different to when the children were small. We had our own ideas as we walked into the house? and then we had to take into account three more opinions, as our children followed us in!?

The tastefully decorated rooms of their children prove that great taste is a trait that runs in the family.
