How To Wear The Dress-Jean Trend In Three Easy Steps

How To Wear The Dress-Jean Trend In Three Easy Steps

An ominous drop in temperatures means one thing: layering. While we’re getting pretty handy at mastering the fine art of layering, we’re always interested in trying new ways to update, rework, adapt and modernise our winter favourites. The dress-jean trend does just that: throwing a dress over denims adds depth and fun to the humble jean. It’s also a great way to get extra wear out of your favourite summer dresses, too. So why not try the jean-trend this weekend? Follow our three easy steps below for maximum style and minimal(ish) effort.

Choose muted tones

Leandra Medine of ManRepeller shows how to execute this trend perfectly by incorporating popular muted tones, obvious layering and trendy skinnies with front ankle slit detailing (then again, does she ever get it wrong?). Follow her example with the  heavy square-neck dress and matching loafers from Cos below. The colour is subtle and warm and the boning down the front of the dress gives the appearance of longer legs. The idea of wearing ankle-length dresses used to seem beyond the realms of possibility for petite women, but this trend is a great way to incorporate longer-length pieces into everyone’s AW wardrobe. Indigo denim is perfectly on-trend for this time of year, too, and really compliments and contrasts the warmth of the muted burgundy.

Experiment with texture

Layering is all about experimenting with different textures and colour palettes, so think of this trend as offering a variety of canvases to play with. We love how Anna Sui styled her AW17 catwalk using heavy, rich colours with mixed appliques and consistencies. The metallics really grab the light and make the outfit look opulent and desirable. Don’t you think?

Florals in winter

There is nothing wrong with beautiful floral motifs in winter. This red dress modelled above a gorgeous transitional piece teams perfectly with light or dark denim. Despite the spaghetti straps, this Erdem x H&M floral slip below is a beautiful investment: simply pair yours with a polo neck or warm T-shirt for chillier days. Pink velour platforms add a perfect weekend colour punch.
