Looking for a little French chic? Then this is the one label you need to know about

Parisian label Sézanne was on my radar for its beautifully fitting denim collection, but not especially as a source of the essential French chic edit. It’s so easy to get stuck in a fashion rut and limit yourself to the usual hit list of high street favourites, isn’t it? But there’s a whole virtual world of fresh, affordable brands that will imbue your wardrobe with an originality you simply won’t get from buying in Zara.

For many women, french chic is the ultimate in sophisticated but understated style. It may be a type of uniform, but there’s nothing boring about it. Although pieces tend to be pared back, the finish and detailing is what elevates them above mere basics. This mohair and wool-mix sweater can be worn with the V-neck to the front or back, making it great value for money. The rich shade of red looks stunning on Irish skin tones, while the lace detailing adds an elegant touch. It’s a subtle piece, but one that is notable for it’s beautiful mix of textures and delicate detailing.

A high-waisted, wide-leg trouser is a wardrobe classic, but Sézanne has modernised it here with a pink chevron fabric. I love how these pants have been styled, with a chic block heel shoe, also in pink (for leg lengthening appeal) and an exquisite lace blouse. How very French.

I absolutely love this white shirt. It’s feminine without being girly, and it’s restrained but not minimalist. It demonstrates everything I love about French style. This shirt would really soften a tailored suit or boyish pants.

Solange shirt, €90

I challenge you to find a French woman who can’t walk in her heels. In my experience, they not only look stylish but comfortable too. These block heel courts tick both boxes. I also think a pair of classic tan shoes is a great wardrobe staple. This pair comes in a suede finish, so they’ll add texture to whatever you wear them with.
