Don’t think you have to relegate sequins to the back of your wardrobe just because it’s January

Don’t think you have to relegate sequins to the back of your wardrobe just because it’s January

I’ve bought only one item in the Christmas sales so far – I tend to wait till the very end when discounts are bigger and the potential for a real bargain much greater – and it’s a midi-length skirt covered in sequins (bought in Zara and reduced from €89.99 to €29.99).

Sequins in January, you say? Absolutely. I think sequins look much fresher out of context, and far more modern. The trick, of course, is to style them in a way that fits with the cosy chic look we all crave in the cold dark months of the New Year. So textured knits are key, as is oversized outerwear and knee-high boots. Use sequins as a punctuation to traditional January garb rather than as the pièce de resisténce.

This sweater will brighten up, and add personality, to a chic pair of wool trousers. Wear with trainers to ensure the whole look appears suitably casual for January.

An oversized cashmere jumper is the perfect pairing for these understated sequinned trousers. Again, I’d wear them with trainers to create the right kind of low-key look.

Perhaps the easiest way to add a bit of sparkle to your January wardrobe is with a sequinned T-shirt. Throw a great big grandfather cardigan over it and wear it with jeans for an outfit that’s individual but nor in-your-face.

Who doesn’t want to cosy up in a hooded top come January? This piece from & Other Stories is perfect, as it has a stunning sequinned bird motif on the back, adding a glamorous point of difference.

Pop this gorgeous cami over a thin-knit polo-neck and a pleated skirt for a sophisticated look that has a playful side to it too.
