LEAH HEWSON, ARTIST

Leah Hewson was combining her studio work with part-time waitressing when she abandoned art to work on the set of TV series Vikings for two years. But she realised, especially after a stint working for artist Sean Scully in New York, that she couldn’t live without creating.

The 31-year-old, who has a rather famous uncle in the form of Bono, has just finished a seven- month residency at the RHA, and her solo exhibition, Scintilla, is there until March 12.

Her work is colourful and energetic and, she believes, truer to herself now.

?After re-evaluating my practice, which used to have some quite dark and sinister elements, I decided that if I was going to pursue this as a career, I have to remember that I’m doing something I love, and so it is okay to make work from a place of joy,? she says.

Next on her to-do list are private commissions and another body of work for exhibition. ?I want to encourage people to play and experiment and hope they get inspired to do so when they see my work.?
