The Dog From The Artist, Uggie, Has Died

Uggie the dog, who captured the hearts of millions of cinema-goers in his turn as The Dog in the Oscar-winning movie, The Artist, has reportedly died. He was aged 13. The Jack Russell terrier was one of the most famous dogs in cinema and counted period drama Water for Elephants with Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon among his starry-for-a-canine CV.

Uggie’s own tale was a rag to riches as the ing?nue role in The Artist, with his fate as pound dog being saved by animal trainer Omar Von Muller. Uggie took to tricks with a charming ease and won a special award for his performance in the silent movie, a Palm Dog at Cannes in 2011.

The Hollywood Reporter cites reports that say Uggie passed on August 7th in Los Angeles. It is understood he had a prostate tumour.

Let’s remember the adorable Uggie as he deserved. As a true entertainer from this clip on The Ellen Show. Uggie’s paw prints are immortalised in the cement outside Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

Rest in peace, dear Uggie.
