Sam Smith Wins Oscar, Loses Twitter After Dustin Lance Black Schools Him

Faye Dunaway lounging by a pool with an Academy Award the morning after the Oscars in 1977 is one of the most iconic photos capturing 20th-century celebrity. Sam Smith’s morning after the Oscars may go down in 21st-century celebrity, but not for its depiction of victorious afterglow. Smith found himself, and his acceptance speech for the Best Song award, being taken to task by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black.

On stage, Sam claimed to be the first openly gay man to win an Academy Award. He said,?”I read an article a few months ago by Sir Ian McKellen and he said no openly gay man had won an Oscar.” The article must have been way out of date because Dustin Lance Black won a statuette in 2009 for his screenplay for Milk, the political biopic starring Sean Penn.

Being a talented writer, Lance Black took to Twitter to deliver a shakedown that deserves all the applause.?Dustin also wanted to send Smith a very personal message – stop texting his fianc?. According to Lance Black, Smith has been messaging the athlete Tom Daley. Lance Black and Daley have been a high-profile item since 2013. They became engaged last year.

It’s such a perfectly written tweet that we think Dustin deserves some sort of Twitter Oscar. All the bravo.
