The Snapper: Rotunda To Honour Birth of Sharon Curley’s Daughter

The Snapper: Rotunda To Honour Birth of Sharon Curley’s Daughter

A plaque dedicated to the 25th anniversary of The Snapper‘s Sharon Curley giving birth to baby Georgina will be unveiled today at the Rotunda Hospital.

For those who have been deprived of watching one of Ireland’s cult classics, The Snapper tells the story of a single teenager called Sharon Rabbitte (later renamed Curley due to licencing issues) who discovers she’s pregnant. She’s too ashamed to reveal who the father is so instead makes up a story about her and a Spanish sailor with hilarious consequences. The film has gone down as one of the most quotable in Irish cinema with the legendary “Is that a turkey or a baby?” heard on an almost daily basis in hospitals across the country.

The film is part of a trilogy by Roddy Doyle set in the fictional village of Barrytown that also includes The Commitments and The Van.The trilogy has been chosen as the Dublin: One City One Book choice for 2015 by Dublin City Council. As well as the plaque there will be a number of other events commemorating the trilogy. For example, Kilbarrack DART station will be renamed Barrytown for the month of April.
