Three quaint country cottages available to buy in Ireland now

City living isn’t for everyone, and with the housing crisis squeezing people out of the capital, we’re looking at residential properties in the countryside. These quaint country homes are in turn-key condition and would make beautiful family homes. Could one of these cottages be a future home for you?

Slate Quarries, Ahenny, Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary – €299,000

This traditional four-bedroom cottage is situated just outside Ahenny Village on four acres of land. The property has been recently renovated to a high standard and is a warm retreat; either as a residential or holiday home. Both the sitting room and dining room feature a cast iron wood-burning stove and wooden floors. What’s more, the kitchen is fitted with modern appliances; including a Miele oven and hob, a Bosch extractor fan, as well as a built-in fridge/freezer. A separate utility room is plumbed and ready for the installation of a washing machine. Two of the bedrooms are on the first floor of the main farmhouse, while two additional bedrooms are located in refurbished outhouses. Each of these external bedrooms has its own bathroom. The grounds of the cottage have been beautifully landscaped with a variety of trees, shrubs and stonework; all of which run down to the nearby river.

Stickens, Donore, Carragh, Co. Kildare – €350,000

This charming cottage in Donore, County Kildare blends traditional design with modern comforts. The roof of this 200-year-old build was re-thatched in November 2010 and the garden has recently been laid with fresh gravel. A new oil heating system was installed in the last number of years and the attic insulation has been upgraded to standard. Two of the home’s three bedrooms include fitted wardrobes, while the third grants access to the attic. The kitchen has been modernised too, with recessed lighting, a tiled splash back area, stainless steel sink, an oven, hob, extractor fan, and washing machine. The property is not overlooked to the front or the rear, and it is secured by a gated entrance.

Mullenkiegh House, Cloughjordan, Co. Tipperary – €495,000

Dating from the 17th century and benefiting from recent renovation works, this country house at Cloughjordan is a comfortable family home. It still maintains many of its original features, including bread ovens which are recessed into the deep stone walls of the kitchen. Some of the rooms have exposed stone walls and high ceilings with wooden beams. There are two spacious bedrooms located on the first floor, with two further bedrooms located on the second floor. The bright master comes with built-in storage and an ensuite. One of the biggest features of this property is its separate studio space. Formerly a piggery, it is spacious enough to be used as an art/woodwork studio. Alternatively, it could be transformed into an additional residential space (subject to planning permission).
