Normal People nominated for 4 Emmy Awards

Paul Mescal gets his first Emmy nod for his captivating performance in Normal People. Did his chain help? Well, it surely didn’t hurt… 


It’s the TV show that stole everyone’s hearts, and across the pond, its had validation from the movie-show bosses with 4 Emmy nominations.

Paul Mescal earned a nod for lead actor in a limited series or movie in recognition of his portrayal of Connell. Director Lenny Abrahamson was recognised for outstanding directing for a limited series for episode five, while Sally Rooney and Alice Birch were nominated for outstanding writing. The series was also nominated for outstanding casting in a limited series, movie or special Louise Kiely.

In Mescal’s category, the Maynooth actor will face competition from the likes of as Hugh Jackman, Jeremy Irons and Mark Ruffalo (for the underrated I Know This Much is True) and Jeremy Pope.

Andrew Scott has been nominated in the Outstanding Guest Actor category for his role in Black Mirror with the brilliant Fiona Shaw nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress for her role in Killing Eve.

HBO’s Watchmen topped the nominations list with 26 nominations followed by Amazon hit The Marvelous Mrs Maisel with 20. Ozark and Succession have 18 each.

Mescal expressed his delight via Twitter:

Next up, director Lenny Abrahamson will go behind the camera for the TV adaptation of Rooney’s Conversations with Friends and the show will be produced for BBC Three.

“I love Conversations With Friends, its depth, humour and freshness, and it’s an honour to be involved in bringing it to the screen. I’m particularly happy that my connection to Sally and her work is set to continue,” he said on the project.
