Why You Need To Walk More

Why You Need To Walk More

There’s nothing like a stroll in the park to get that blood flowing and equilibrium’restored but chances are; we could all be doing more of it. Not only is stretching?your legs one of the best forms of exercise, studies have proven that a simple walk can have enormously positive effects on our mental health and that it’s even better than a heavy session at the gym.

If all this doesn’t encourage you to lace up your walking shoes – asides from the fact that exercise, in general, also lowers your risk of diabetes, coronary heart disease and it’s more effective than cutting calories – this latest news may do the trick.

According to a new study from the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in New York, getting just a measly half hour of exercise each week can seriously slash your rate of one cancer in particular: cervical cancer.

Even if somebody got up and took a walk after dinner one night a week just to get 30 minutes of their heart rate up, that’s all it takes

The study’s lead author Dr. Szender said this is the first U.S. study looking at the association between physical activity and cervical cancer. Roswell looked at 128 patients diagnosed with the cancer and 512 women suspected of having it but ultimately not diagnosed.

The women who weren’t active were two-and-a-half times more likely to develop it. Yikes. The researchers said these latest results should emphasise the fact that not exercising increases your chances of developing a serious disease.

?What we were looking at is even if somebody got up and took a walk after dinner one night a week just to get 30 minutes of their heart rate up, that’s all it takes. In terms of cervical cancer prevention, we recommend the HPV vaccination, regular screening examinations, and now we can recommend even just going for a walk once a week,? said Doctor James Szenderm, of the Roswell Park Cancer Institute Department of Gynecologic Oncology.

He added that over thirteen thousand women in New York alone are diagnosed with cervical cancer per year, but positively overall rates have decreased.

It’s the start of a new week; seize the moment, make the most of the sunshine and get walking today. Your body and mind will soon reap the benefits. It’s good to include your friends too.
