You may no longer have a literal first day of term to go back to, but there’s undoubtedly something about September that makes us want to shake things up and get ready for the new season ahead. Your bedroom may not be as prominent a space in your home as the kitchen or living room, but this doesn’t mean it should be neglected.
As the place where you wind down for the day and get some much-needed Z’s, it can have a big impact on your stress levels. Clutter, poor-quality bedding, unsuitable lighting and a generally uninspiring space can affect everything from how much sleep you get to how long it takes you to get out the door in the morning. We’ve picked five ways you can get your bedroom back to its best, so you can make sure it’s a relaxing retreat.
Choose a calming palette
Obviously be led by your own taste here, but certain colour palettes are always going to be more calming than others. Choose a select few shades for a cohesive feel. This bedroom by Habitat has chosen soft pinks, blues, and greys, as well as some natural browns for a look that’s far from bland, yet perfectly restful. Details like the recurring stripes and a variety of textures also inject a touch of personality, and prevent it from looking too flat. We also love the imperfection of the paint on the wall, like a relaxed (and reversible) take on a dado rail.
Layer up your fabrics
Create a space to retreat to with an array of textures and colours. Layer blankets and throws with different cushions to create a cosy space that feels special. The weave of this side table adds another textural element, as well as some carefully chosen trinkets to complete the look. Camo side table €143, Table Clock €19, Green Glass Pill vase €52, Blue Cotton cushion €48, Yellow Wool Cushion €68, Grey acrylic throw €105, Bloomingville.
Get the lighting right
When you’re winding down for the day, it’s helpful to be able to adjust your bedroom lighting to a dim glow. Bedside lamps are perfect for this, and there are plenty of different options, like these two Ikea designs. If you like to read in bed, make sure your lamp allows you to angle the light as necessary; or an exposed design will simply give a soft glow – just make sure to choose a low-wattage bulb.
Let nature in
We’re seeing a return of earthy fawns and browns in this season’s interior trends, and it’s a welcome reminder of how calming these natural shades can be. Keep it simple and warm by pairing with creams. Cotton duvet cover with contrasting linen border from €59.99, Rustic bedspread €99.99, Zara Home.
Storage is key
Nothing will make your bedroom a stressful space faster than clutter, so if your wardrobe is bursting and you really do want to keep everything in it, consider getting an additional rail, like this one from Made.com (around €143). Its lack of doors will encourage you to keep it neat, and you’ll also be able to see what you have at a glance – no frantic rooting around for your favourite top in the morning.
