Cate Blanchett To Join The Superhero Business

Cate Blanchett To Join The Superhero Business

In a somewhat unexpected news, it has emerged the critically acclaimed actress Cate Blanchett will be joining the ranks of movie superheroes and will be starring in Thor 3. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actress is currently in final negotiations to join the Marvel Studio project.

The move comes a little more than a week after the Marvel Studios project hired Stephany Folsom to work on the script. She’s an unknown at this point, but the buzz around her sounds promising.

It is unclear what character Blanchett would play, but several sources say that Marvel has been on the hunt for a ?bad-ass female.? Sounds good to us and right up Blanchett’s alley; she’s known for her repertoire of strong female characters. This is a surprise move for a number of reasons, the main being that since Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, the star has stayed away from big budget franchises, favouring indie and independent projects. This will see her take a lead role in her first comic book adaptation.

Thor: Ragnarok will also feature Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk and the villainous Tom Hiddleston, who plays Loki in The Avengers universe. It will reportedly hit screens in November 2017.

It will be great to see the actress gain more mainstream exposure, as despite her remarkable talent and multiple award wins, it still seems as though Blanchett is underutilised. Though she has had a successful 2015.

She recently starred in 1950s drama Carol, which led all Golden Globe nominees?on Thursday, scoring five nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actress for Blanchett.

In addition to Carol, the Australian star also appeared in Truth and Disney’s Cinderella remake earlier this year.

Taika Waititi, who co-wrote and co-directed vampire spoof What We Do in the Shadows, is directing the project, the third instalment of the Thor movies. We’re excited. If anyone can bring an empowering female presence to what is a largely male-dominated franchise, it will be Blanchett. Oh, and the film will feature Chris Hemsworth, which is never a bad thing.
