Amy Schumer Opens Up About Body Confidence Struggles

Amy Schumer Opens Up About Body Confidence Struggles

Here at IMAGE.ie, we’ve been unashamedly vocal about our love for Amy Schumer. The notoriously talented actress and comedian has had a stellar year; she starred in the fantastic, box office hit that was?Trainwreck, won the Emmys, stole the hearts of everyone in Dublin and isn’t afraid to speak her mind. Oh, and she’s BFFs with JLaw. She is a woman to be admired for her empowering comments to fellow females and her latest interview only makes us love her all the more.

Speaking on the Today Show, Schumer opened up about her struggles to maintain body confidence – something we’ve all dealt with in some form. She revealed that she often felt so debilitated by her confidence issues that it was a struggle to go on stage: ?Some nights I didn’t even want to go on stage because I couldn’t find an outfit I felt good in,? she said.

The Trainwreck star and recent Saturday Night Live host revealed her struggle as part of a promotion for her partnership with Goodwill of Southern California ?to educate and inspire women through fashion.?

?It’s an emotional thing,? Schumer said. ?It’s been a struggle for me my whole life, and especially just being in the entertainment industry. Standing on a stage in front of people, I can’t perform my best or be confident if I’m not sure – if I’m pulling at [my clothes]. And sometimes I would just want to throw in the towel and be like, ?I’m not gonna go do standup tonight.??

As someone who exudes confidence while on stage, it was clearly no easy feat to speak openly about an issue that has affected her so, and she became emotional in the video interview as she spoke about herself and her sister gaining confidence after Trainwreck.

Schumer explained she gained a new perspective on her clothing choices after working with stylist Leesa Evans on the set of the film. ?My sister and I, we both have always dressed badly. Leesa had given me this gift of showing me how to dress and feel good. And she didn’t have to do this, she just did. She shopped for my sister also, and seeing my little sister wearing a little blazer and a shirt and looking just like a strong, beautiful woman being given those tools was really moving for me.?

This isn’t the first Schumer has spoken out about similar issues. She also discussed confidence and body issues in the past, perhaps most memorably during a speech in May this year:

?I am a woman with thoughts and questions and sh? to say. I say if I’m beautiful. I say if I’m strong. You will not determine my story – I will,? Schumer said. ?I will speak and share and f? and love and I will never apologise to the frightened millions who resent that they never had it in them to do it. I stand here, and I am amazing, for you. Not because of you. I am not who I sleep with. I am not my weight. I am not my mother. I am myself,? she said.

Schumer’s relatable words will undoubtedly ring home for many women – who hasn’t dealt with such issues at one point or another? Her openness is uplifting and just another reason it is darn right impossible not to love Amy Schumer.
