A Dirty Dancing Remake Is Happening

A Dirty Dancing Remake Is Happening

Fans of the cult classic that is Dirty Dancing are likely divided into two camps: their love for the film runs so deep that they would rejoice at the thought of a modern day remake or, they are so obsessed with the original that they would seek very real revenge on anyone who dares replace their beloved Patrick Swayze. Depending on which side of the fence you sit, this news will either thrill you or make you shed a few tears.

Either way, prepare yourselves because Dirty Dancing is getting a genuine once over, in the form of TV musical. The iconic 1987 film starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey is being turned into a three-hour musical that will show on ABC though the network has yet to announce an air date.

For ABC’s three-hour musical event, Scream Queens star Abigail Breslin will step into Grey’s shoes, playing ‘Baby,’ the young woman who falls for the camp’s dance instructor Johnny, although there is no word yet on who will pay the part that Swayze made so iconic. We feel a tad sorry for whoever has to attempt to fill his shoes, tbh.

The movie will be set in the ’60s, as the original was, according to Variety.

The move marks ABC’s first step into the ‘musical event’ genre, and many will agree that they are on slightly dangerous territory attempting to remake such a beloved film, but the production team sounds top-notch and, reassuringly, includes the writer of the original movie script. Executive producers include Allison Shearmur (of The Hunger Games franchise) and Eleanor Bergstein, who also wrote the screenplay for the original movie. Adam Anders and Peer Astrom (the team behind Glee‘s catchy tunes) will do the music.

Other details are sketchy, but we’re eager to know more. Will the infamous line “Nobody puts Baby in a corner” have its own musical accompaniment? Will it include “She’s like the Wind”? (It better). Will Breslin get to wear that pink dress? While we await more details, here is quite possibly, the best movie dance scene of all time for you to enjoy:
