US Election update: Crucial Wisconsin State goes to Biden

US Election update: Crucial Wisconsin State goes to Biden

Well into Day 2 of the US election count, it is still a razor-tight race between the two candidates as the tallying of crucial votes in key States keep getting counted. Joe Biden and his team are quietly confident he will make it to the White House as he takes Wisconsin but it is still considered an open race

With votes for key swing states still too close to call, there is no clear winner projected, but Democrat Joe Biden appears to have the clearest path to victory.

The race is coming down to a handful of states, including Michigan, Arizona and Pennsylvania. Biden is ahead in Michigan but it may take days for the result in Pennsylvania to become clear but already Trump’s team say they want to intervene in the final tally.

Trump’s campaign has also said it will request a recount in Wisconsin after Biden won the state by less than 1% of the vote. Any presidential candidate has the right to request a recount, however, US legal experts say the count difference, even though the percentages are extremely close, will make little difference as Biden leads by tens of thousands – not enough, they say, for a genuine basis for a recount.

“There have been reports of irregularities in several Wisconsin counties which raise serious doubts about the validity of the results,” campaign manager Bill Stepien said in a statement. There appears to be no evidence for the claims. Officials in Wisconsin are expected to officially declare a winner in the coming hours.

Trump’s campaign also said that it had filed a lawsuit to stop the counting of votes in Michigan until “meaningful access” was granted. It also demanded to review ballots that were opened and counted when it did not have meaningful access.

It is clear that Trump is feeling the pressure of the race potentially slipping away from him; experts pointed out that he had not requested recounts of, for example, another crucial State of Florida, where he was the winner by a small margin.  It appears to be only the key States where Biden leads that he seeks legal intervention.

Shortly after 6pm Irish time, Biden led 227 to 213 over Trump in the Electoral College vote count, aiming to reach the needed 270 electoral votes.

Trump said in the early hours of this morning he will go to the Supreme Court. He said: “Frankly, we did win this election.”

This is, of course, not the case. Trump is trying to stall, but the numbers may soon speak for themselves.
