The best memes and Tweets from last night’s Met Gala

The Met Gala 2021 may have been a let-down in terms of star power but it was high in meme quality.

The first Met Gala in over two years with the museum steps last night and while no one has ever quite hit the steps like Jason Derulo (shout to my meme friends out there!), it was still a mem-heavy night.

Despite it’s long-awaited return all-in-all attendance was pretty low, probably due to the fact that it’s happening again in a few short months with they will go back to their usual first Monday in May slot, and also because of Covid concern.

Fan favourites like Blake Lively, Zendaya, Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj were not in attendance and there was a slew of TikTok and YouTube stars strutting the steps instead, including the likes of Addison Rae and Emma Chamberlain.

Thankfully, they gave us plenty to work with though. Here’s our favourite Tweets of the night.

The theme

Some people go hard on the theme, while others just disregard it completely. Met Gala 2021 theme was In America: A Lexicon of Fashion although you wouldn’t have guessed it.

One Twitter user eventually settled on “Seltzer” as the theme and I must admit she makes a very persuasive case:

While others were determining their loves of looks based on the quality of memes. However, I would estimate by those standards Kim K was the out-and-out winner while Iman (who looks INCREDIBLE) has neigh a vote.

Frank Ocean and his green robot baby

Okay first up is the typically camera-shy Frank Ocean in Prada… and a green baby? Perhaps a nod to Hollywood and their skills at bringing CGI babies to life… lol JK, who remembers Renesmee?

However, while some of us got distracted by the moving green baby on his hip, Ocean’s fans wanted to know if this was a clue for his much-anticipated, long-awaited new album.

God bless them, they don’t get many sightings so I hope this gives them something.

Lil Nas X

Can we start by saying at Lil Nas X is single-handedly raising the red carpet game for men’s fashion. I mean, it’s about time male pop stars start reaching for the heights of Gaga and Minaj, welcome welcome.

I have to say, I love his one, two, three looks, he went for it. Now I’m not sure exactly how it related to the theme but he understood the Met Gala assignment and that’s all we could ask for.

Pete Davidson joins Disney

Ha, that would be a surprise move, no? Helped by the aforementioned Lil Nas and Harry Styles no doubt, there was a surprising amount of men in skirts at this year’s Met Gala.

Pete Davidson said he was channelling a “sexy nun” in his Thom Browne black dress and pearls, but one Twitter user pointed to a different inspiration that seems much more accurate.

Let’s just hope he doesn’t join James Corden for the next Musical Crossing…

Who wasn’t there

Nicki Minaj stated on Twitter that she wasn’t attending this year’s Met Gala on account of the vaccine requirement. She said she would likely get it and that she’s still doing some research, but with a young child at home she didn’t want to risk it. Which is fair and each to their own.

However, she then proceeded to tell the story of her cousin’s friend who “became impotent” after receiving the vaccine and now his fiancé had left him as a result. Naturally enough, it set Twitter alight with many wondering why his vaccine side-effects sounded a lot like an STI…

And last but certainly not least, Kim K

I mean, there aren’t words really. Kim K blessed us with the best of memes. We thank her.

Closing out with my absolute favourite one of the night:

That’s all folks! See you next May as we get back to regularly scheduled Met Gala programming.
