Israel orders evacuation of northern Gaza
Israel has ordered the evacuation of 1.1 million people from northern Gaza within 24 hours, something the UN has described as “impossible”. Hamas has since rejected this order, and in a statement said: “Our Palestinian people reject the threat of the occupation (Israeli) leaders and its call for them to leave their homes and flee from them to the south (of Gaza) or Egypt.” Hamas also says at least 13 Israeli and foreign hostages held in the northern Gaza Strip have been killed in Israeli air strikes in the past 24 hours.
Body found in Tina Satchwell’s home
Gardaí investigating the murder of Tina Satchwell have found skeletal remains in a walled-up area underneath a stairwell during excavations at her Co Cork home. A man in his 50s has been arrested on suspicion of murder. Ms Satchwell was reported missing in March 2017. The human remains were found as garda technical experts excavated the interior and exterior of the property on Grattan Street in Youghal. The remains, understood to involve an almost complete skeleton, were found in an area underneath the stairwell.
Man jailed for ‘terrifying’ attack on priest
A man who attacked and left a priest “terrified” has been sentenced to six years in prison. Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard that 47-year-old Anthony Connors, formally of South Richmond Street, Dublin 2, pleaded guilty to the robbery of a priest at a parochial house in the Coolock area in 2021. He has 61 previous convictions, including for burglary, false imprisonment, criminal damage, assault and impersonating a member of the gardaí. The judge said the priest was threatened with a knife and was “attacked and terrified”. He said the accused has a long record of convictions.
Garda age limit raised
Minister for Justice Helen McEntee said the entry requirement age is being changed from 35 to 50 to give as many people the opportunity to apply as possible. The garda fitness test is also going to be adapted in line with the current age-related graduated system. The minister and Garda Commissioner Drew Harris are due to attend a graduation ceremony for 126 new gardaí at Templemore. Ms McEntee said she will bring proposals to increase the application age limit to Government for approval shortly.
