Emily Hand refuses to speak above whisper after hostage ordeal, father says
The father of Irish-Israeli girl Emily Hand, who was taken hostage by Hamas, has said his daughter only speaks in whispers after she was ordered to remain silent during her captivity. Tom Hand, 63, was reunited with his nine-year-old daughter Emily after 50 days held as a hostage in Gaza. She had been abducted while at a sleepover in Kibbutz Be’eri during the Hamas attack on 7 October, along with her friend Hila, 13, who has also been released. Speaking to The Sun newspaper, Mr Hand said he will do “whatever it takes” to restore his daughter’s sense of safety and wellbeing.

Dublin riots: Hardcore far-right group at centre of Garda investigations
A small hardcore group of far-right agitators was last night at the centre of the Garda’s investigations into the Dublin riots as detectives try to to unearth evidence that would lead to criminal charges against them. While the arrests and charges to date have focused on those allegedly involved in last Thursday’s rioting, another priority element is to bring to justice those ringleaders who sparked the violence. Members of the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation (NBCI) were gathering social media posts, as well as written and voice content from messaging apps, to ground incitement of hatred charges.

Veronica Guerin murderer Brian Meehan has parole refused and must remain in Shelton Abbey Prison
The only man convicted of the murder of journalist Veronica Guerin has been refused parole and will spend another Christmas in prison. Brian Meehan (56) was jailed in December 1999 for murdering the Sunday Independent crime writer on June 26, 1996. He was an integral part of the hit team that shot the 36-year-old mother of one as she drove from Naas to Dublin following a court case.

Emergency services are at the scene of a serious road traffic incident near Cork City this morning. Roads in the Gortnalahee area near Carrignavar have been closed while gardaí and emergency services deal with what is believed to have been a single vehicle incident which occurred at around 7am.

‘A long way from normal’: Families say visits to prison still restricted post-pandemic

The Irish Prison Service said that visiting was back to normal in December 2022 but an investigation by Noteworthy has found that visiting restrictions continue in practice due to resource constraints. The number of children visiting prisons has also not returned to its pre-pandemic level, our analysis can reveal.

US military aircraft with eight aboard crashes off Japan island
A US military aircraft with eight personnel on board has crashed off Yakushima Island in Japan. Japan’s coast guard told the BBC that rescue workers have found a passenger who was “not breathing”. Local media also quoted officials who said the remains of the plane have likely been found off Yakushima. Japanese broadcaster NHK said the CV-22 Osprey was trying to land at Yakushima Airport and that its left engine was on fire. The aircraft was thought to be heading from Iwakuni base in the Yamaguchi region to Kadena base in Okinawa.
