Eurofound research
According to research conducted by EU agency Eurofound, Ireland is one of seven EU countries that saw the biggest increase in young adults (25-34 years old) living with their parents between 2010 and 2019. Census findings also show a drop in overall homeownership of 4% between 2011 and 2022. In the EU as a whole, 29% of 25 to 34-year-olds lived with their parents in 2010, a number that increased to 31% by 2019. For Ireland, the increase in this area was much higher than most of the EU, alongside Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Italy and Spain, rising by 6% or more in the same period.
Clare jet-ski incident
The chairperson of the Killaloe-Ballina Search and Recovery Unit has said that the death of a 19-year-old man while jet-skiing in Co Clare has “cast a very dark shadow” over the community. The incident occurred on Lough Derg, Killaloe, when a jet ski carrying three people, flipped over near Killaloe bridge, throwing all three into the water. Two people were rescued from the water safely.
Russian bombardment of Ukraine’s capital
The latest pre-dawn Russian missile attack on Kyiv has killed at least three people, including a nine-year-old girl and her mother. Ukrainian air defences on Thursday shot down all 10 cruise and ballistic missiles launched by the Kremlin’s forces but falling debris caused damage and casualties on the ground, wounding 16 people.
Evelyn Cusack retires
Ireland’s longest-serving TV weather presenter Evelyn Cusack retires after 42 years at Met Éireann.
Speaking this morning to RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, she said: “I tend to be wheeled out during the bad weather so it’s great to be here on a lovely, sunny weekend.” Cusack started at Met Éireann in 1981, when there were no satellites or internet, and has been presenting the weather forecast on RTÉ for 30 years.
That ’70s Show star found guilty of rape
Danny Masterson, who played Hyde in That ’70s Show, has been found guilty of two counts of rape in a retrial in which the Church of Scientology played a central role. The jury of seven women and five men reached the verdict after deliberating for seven days spread over two weeks. They could not reach a verdict on the third count, that alleged Masterson raped a longtime girlfriend. The 47-year-old actor faces up to 30 years in prison.
