Israeli military proposes ‘plan for evacuating’ Gaza civilians ahead of feared Rafah invasion
Israel’s military has proposed a plan for moving civilians out of “areas of fighting” in Gaza, according to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office. Netanyahu is pushing forward with plans to stage a ground operation in Rafah, claiming such a move is necessary, while international governments and humanitarian organisations have demanded the plan does not go ahead, expressing fears that an invasion of Rafah would inflict mass civilian casualties. More than 1.4 million Palestinians, most of them displaced from other parts of Gaza, are sheltering in Rafah, the southern border city.

Ryanair tried to get state action over disruptive passengers on their flights
Ryanair has failed in a bid to get the Department of Justice to take action in relation to disruptive passengers on board their flights. Michael O’Leary, the group chief executive, wrote to the minister last year to say it was “crucial” that, as a matter of policy, Irish authorities asserted their jurisdiction in relation to on-board incidents, in order to provide an effective deterrent against disruptive behaviour.

Portugal’s far right on rise as election campaign begins
Portugal’s two-week general election campaign has officially begun with centre-right and centre-left parties leading in the polls, but a far-right populist forecast to collect almost a fifth of the vote is a further sign of Europe’s nativist drift. Chega (Enough), led by 41-year-old former football commentator André Ventura, could become kingmaker if the polls prove accurate. His party scored 1.3% of votes in 2019’s election but jumped to 7.3% in 2022 and has since climned by about 19%. Luís Montenegro, leader of the conservative Social Democratic party (SDP), launched his campaign in the northern district of Bragança, saying he was confident of a “great victory” for the three-party alliance he has formed with two smaller rightist parties.
