Hamas proposes three-stage ceasefire over 135 days, leading to end of war
Hamas has proposed a ceasefire plan for Gaza for four-and-a-half months and leading to an end to the war, in response to a proposal sent last week by Qatari and Egyptian mediators and backed by the United States and Israel. According to a draft document seen by Reuters, the Hamas counterproposal envisions three phases lasting 45 days each. The proposal would see militants exchange remaining Israeli hostages they captured on 7 October for Palestinian prisoners. The reconstruction of Gaza would begin, Israeli forces would withdraw completely, and bodies and remains would be exchanged.

Temple Street hospital spinal surgery review widened to 17 more ‘cases of concern’
Completion of an independent review into spinal surgeries at Temple Street children’s hospital has been delayed after 17 additional “cases of concern” were identified. The decision by the UK expert carrying out the review to include further cases in Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) and the National Orthopaedic Hospital Cappagh means the number of children’s surgeries under investigation has effectively doubled. Last September, the HSE commissioned Selvadurai Nayagam, a consultant in orthopaedics and trauma at Royal Liverpool children’s hospital, to review surgeries carried out by a Temple Street surgeon. This came after internal reviews identified serious spinal surgical incidents, including the death of one child and others with serious post-operative complications. It then emerged that unauthorised springs had been used in three patients.

Gardaí expected to launch murder probe as Macroom victim named locally
Gardaí are poised to launch a murder investigation today following the discovery of a man, who it’s suspected was beaten to death in his sheltered housing accommodation, in Cork. Michael Foley, 61, who was originally from Clonakilty in West Cork, was found lying in a pool of blood, with apparent head and facial injuries, in the kitchen of his house at Annville — a sheltered housing development in the heart of Macroom at around lunchtime yesterday. Gardaí were called and he was pronounced dead at the scene. It is the second tragedy to hit the Foley family in recent years. Michael Foley’s younger brother Timmy was stabbed to death in a house, also in Macroom, in 2018. He was 44.

Flogas is cutting its variable rates for residential electricity and gas bills. Several energy suppliers, including Energia, Bord Gáis Energy and Electric Ireland, have decreased their costs in recent months as the pressure that built up on the sector in 2022 eases. Flogas customers can expect a reduction in the standard unit rate of electricity by 15% and gas by 25%. The change will come into effect on 25 March, the second time the supplier has reduced its prices in around four months.

Donald Trump’s failed immunity appeal is still a win for his delay strategy
Donald Trump has been handed a defeat in court – but one that comes with a generous helping of victory. An appeals court ruled that Mr Trump is not immune from criminal prosecution for acts committed while he was president. The time it took to issue that decision, however, has indefinitely delayed Mr Trump’s federal trial related to the 6 January 2021 attack on the US Capitol. So while Mr Trump did not successfully assert sweeping new presidential powers to act with impunity while in office, the tentative 4 March start date in Washington DC has been removed from the federal court’s calendar. And there is no indication of when it might reappear.

Blasts heard in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities amid mass missile strikes
Russia launched a missile attack on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities on Wednesday morning, Ukraine’s air force said, killing one person in the south and triggering air defence systems in the capital, where several blasts were heard. Two loud explosions were heard in the centre of the city at around 7am, with at least two more 45 minutes later on, the Kyiv Post reported. One of its reporters heard air defences engaging multiple projectiles and saw one in-air explosion. Kyiv’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, said that air defence systems were engaged and urged people to stay in their shelters.
