Elderly couple killed in horror road collision with car-transporter lorry
An elderly couple who died after a horrific multi-vehicle road traffic accident in Cork have been named locally as John (83) and Bernadette (82) Allen. The collision occurred outside Ringaskiddy at 11.15am on the busy N28 near the Shannon Park roundabout and involved an articulated car-transport lorry and a car, with two other vehicles also damaged. A third motorist was seriously injured in the accident.

Belfast researcher given £280,000 funding to develop new treatment for prostate cancer
A researcher at Queen’s University in Belfast has been awarded more than £280,000 to develop a new treatment for prostate cancer. Dr Victoria Dunne has been given the funding by Prostate Cancer UK to investigate the first personalised radiotherapy treatment for advanced prostate cancer based on men’s genes. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, affecting one in eight in their lifetime. It commonly spreads to the bones, which can cause pain, reduce mobility, and can ultimately be fatal.

Mikhail Gorbachev, former Soviet leader who ended cold war, dies aged 91
Mikhail Gorbachev, who as the last leader of the Soviet Union waged a losing battle to salvage a crumbling empire but produced extraordinary reforms that led to the end of the Cold War, has died at 91, according to Russian media. News organisations quoted a statement from the Central Clinical Hospital as saying he died after a long illness. No other details were given.
