Federal judge to set date for historic Trump trial
A federal judge is expected to set a date for what could be one of the most momentous trials in American history: the United States of America versus Donald J Trump. Special counsel Jack Smith has asked for the trial of the 45th US president – who faces charges of conspiring to overturn the 2020 election which he lost – to begin on 2 January 2024. Mr Trump’s attorneys have countered with a proposed date of April 2026 – well after the November 2024 election in which the real estate tycoon is seeking to return to the White House.

A register containing information on industries abstracting intensive volumes of water from rivers and lakes across the country has been published for the first time. However, information on almost 150 farming businesses pumping or diverting water has been redacted in the document. Businesses must register if they are abstracting 25,000 litres per day. The information is then held by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Ireland’s environmental regulator.

The first osprey chicks have been released into the wild after being extinct from the country for more than a century and a half. It follows a momentous first sighting of naturally-established breeding ospreys discovered last week at a nesting site in the North.

Simone Biles wins record eighth US all-around title as comeback continues
Simone Biles broke a 90-year record by winning her eighth all-around title at the US Gymnastics Championships. Her win comes less than a month after the four-time Olympic champion returned to competition, following a two-year break to work on her mental health. The 26-year-old’s floor routine earned a score of 15.400, giving her an all-around total of 118.450, with Shilese Jones 3.9 points back in second. Biles moves ahead of Alfred Jochim, who claimed his seventh US title in 1933. She was the only competitor to finish the two days of competition in San Jose with two scores of 15 or higher, having taken control of the event with 15.700 on the vault on Friday.

People have been injured after a P&O cruise liner was involved in a “weather-related incident” in Mallorca, the company has said. It is reported that P&O ship Britannia, carrying thousands of travellers, crashed into a freight vessel on Sunday morning during severe storms.

Libya suspends foreign minister after Israel meeting sparks protests
The leader of Libya’s government has suspended his foreign minister after her Israeli counterpart announced he had held talks with her last week in Rome, despite the countries not having formal relations. Prime minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah said on Sunday evening that minister Najla al-Mangoush has been “temporarily suspended” and would be subject to an “administrative investigation” by a commission chaired by the justice minister. On the streets of Tripoli and its suburbs, protests erupted on Sunday evening in a sign of refusal of normalisation with Israel. The protests spread to other cities where young people blocked roads, burned tyres and waved the Palestinian flag.
