‘Deep concerns’ as thousands of PSNI officers and civilians affected in ‘significant’ data breach
Northern Ireland secretary Chris Heaton Harris has said he is “deeply concerned” after the personal and employement data of thousands of serving PSNI officers and civilian staff was compromised in a “significant” data breach. The Police Federation for Northern Ireland (PFNI) said its members are “appalled”. The incident happened when the PSNI responded to a Freedom of Information request seeking the number of officers and staff at all ranks and grades across the organisation. In the published response to this request a table was embedded that contained the rank and grade data, but also included detailed information that attached the surname, initial, the location and the departments for all employees of the PSNI. The data was potentially viewable by the public for between 2.5 to three hours.

Increase in child benefit on table in Coalition Budget talks
An increase in the €140 monthly child benefit payment – affecting 650,000 families – has been put on the table in coalition talks on the Budget, the Irish Independent can reveal. The possibility of increasing the core rate, which is paid in respect of 1.2 million children across the country, has been discussed as an option by ministers in preliminary Budget 2024 talks. Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has pledged to address child poverty levels in Ireland and a number of measures are being examined, including increases in targeted payments for low-income families and a repeat of the one-off double child benefit payment in last year’s Budget.

Amazon nations fall short of agreed goal to end deforestation
The eight countries that share the Amazon basin have fallen short of an agreed goal to end deforestation. Delegates from the countries are meeting in the Brazilian city of Belém for a two-day summit on the issue, the first such gathering in 14 years. A joint declaration on Tuesday created an alliance to combat deforestation, but left each country to pursue its own conservation goals. Preserving the Amazon is a central part of efforts to tackle climate change.
