Tommy Hilfiger x Richard Quinn: Think bold patterns, exaggerated silhouettes and ivy-league classics

Tommy Hilfiger has teamed up with award-winning British designer Richard Quinn to create a limited-edition capsule that’s all about reimagining the classics.

Intermixing Quinn’s iconoclastic vision and signature use of bold patterns and exaggerated silhouettes, with Hilfiger’s iconic take on American classics – from varsity jackets to five-pocket jeans, chinos and leather jackets – the new line comprises 40 different pieces and serves as a resounding gender-inclusive celebration of individuality and style.

We caught up with both Hilfiger and Quinn to chat through their recent collaboration.

Why did you want to collaborate with Richard Quinn?
“I’ve always been interested in collaborations with people who are breaking tradition and shaping pop culture, and Richard is no exception. His brand aesthetic is so unique and different to ours, and I was immediately excited by how we could collide our worlds together. Richard seems to have no creative limits, and I’m inspired by how he pushes the boundaries of design.” – Tommy Hilfiger

What was your impression of Tommy and what were your first thoughts about the collaboration?
“I’m a long-time fan of Tommy and the incredible legacy he’s built as a fashion designer. Looking back at his brand’s history of collaborations, I love how he’s been open to fresh ideas and partnerships that are different or unpredictable. I also admire his determined spirit. He’s a living example of the American Dream. Naturally, I was very excited about the collaboration!” – Richard Quinn

What was your inspiration for the collaboration?
“Our collection takes Tommy’s classic American archetypes and explores them through my creative lens. We collided his preppy-yet-cool DNA with what I call my “cracked couture” aesthetic, for something provocative and fashion-forward.” – Richard Quinn

How are your two worlds brought together in this capsule?
“The pieces celebrate and synergise the design codes at the heart of each of our brands. We took inspiration from our preppy rugby stripes, signature tartan prints, and of course the American flag, combined with Richard’s head-to-toe prints, clashing textures and sense of imagination. The result is something of an over-the-top fantasy world, and I love it.” – Tommy Hilfiger

What was your favourite part of the design process?
“I was incredibly excited to be able to work with the new monogram. It’s such an iconic logo already and this new iteration is really strong. I decided to disrupt it by clashing it with my signature daisy print; it looks unique but still honours the original. We then translated it into a  repeated print and transposed it onto jacquard, denim, nylon and velvet.” – Richard Quinn

Can you tell us about the monogram in this collection?
“We’re launching a new monogram with our FA 22 collection – a reinterpretation of the classic Tommy Hilfiger motif. For this capsule, Richard has remixed it with his signature Daisy print. It’s exciting as it already marks a new era for our brand and Richard’s reimagining makes a powerful statement of creativity and self-expression.” – Tommy Hilfiger

How did you balance your differing design aesthetics?
“Our vision was to explore a new take on modern prep by fusing our red, white and blue palette with Richard’s statement prints. It’s bold, fun and all about the contrast. Plus, we both share a commitment to craftmanship, which was an important element of our collection.” – Tommy Hilfiger

How did you merge your two worlds together?
“Throughout the collection, we fused signature elements from both our brands, for balance and synergy. We’ve got lots of iconic Tommy Hilfiger silhouettes – like the peacoat, double-breasted blazer and the varsity jacket – and paired them with my trademark touch in printed velours, studded leather, and embroidery details. I love how the collection reflects both brands’ signature styles while pushing the limits of fashion.” – Richard Quinn

What are your favourite pieces from the collection?
“The oversized monogram puffer is my personal favourite. We started with Richard’s full-length parka and reimagined it with new details and mix-and-match prints.” – Tommy Hilfiger

What three words would you use to describe the collection and campaign?
“Playful. Reinvention. Unexpected.” – Tommy Hilfiger

“Disruptive. Vibrant. Optimistic.” – Richard Quinn

Tommy Hilfiger x Richard Quinn launched online on and in select Tommy Hilfiger stores worldwide on September 1.
