Embrace your inner magpie with this season’s offering of all things that gleam and glimmer. Although perfect partywear, it’s also the perfect flourish to more casual looks.

Compiled by Megan Burns and Sinéad Keenan

As the colder months roll around and daylight is thin on the ground, it’s not hard to see why we might be attracted to the glint of metallic fabrics. Not only are they perfect for the festive season and its many gatherings, but as contributing fashion stylist Sinéad Keenan points out, you shouldn’t feel the need to restrict them to evening wear.

“In a season where quiet luxury, elevated basics and a neutral palette of black, grey, brown, and navy were the norm,” Sinéad says, “these lustrous fabrics brought a welcome flash of glamour and excitement to a very sombre season.”

And what better way to add some glamour to an everyday look than a shimmer of silver or a glint of gold? “The days of reserving metallics solely for evening are long gone and AW23 certainly encouraged plenty of daytime shimmer and shine,” Sinéad says. Some of her favourite pieces include a boardroom-style blazer gilded in gold at Dries Van Noten, and Ganni’s metallic denim pieces, the perfect example of how a simple shine can make an everyday fabric stand out.

“There were beautiful metallic leather and shearling pieces at Coach and the embellished full skirt shown at Celine with a bomber gilet and fair-isle knit really was the epitome of elevated basics.”

As well as giving wardrobe staples the shimmering treatment, Sinéad also loved the effect of woven fabrics in metallic tones. “Whether they draped the body like liquid metal as seen at Blumarine or worn as Gladiator-esque armoured pieces like at Rabanne, metallics certainly shone through as a standout textile for AW23.”

The look doesn’t have to be high-octane, however, with plenty of very wearable styling seen on the catwalks. “High shine metallics were toned down with leggings and opaque tights at Isabel Marant and Ferragamo,” Sinéad says, “where it was all about balancing the shimmer with a quiet sophistication.”

Accessories are also an easy way into the trend. “Gold leather boots enhanced plain black ensembles at Khaite and an oversized gold metallic clutch at Simone Rocha is the perfect way to introduce a reflective surface into your look.” Choosing classic styles makes these burnished pieces surprisingly timeless, too, so any investment is sure to pay off for years to come.
