The trending cuts and colours to know for your long-awaited hair appointment

Finally, the salons are reopened! Are you ready for a dramatic hair transformation? We had a Zoom call with celebrity hairstylists Larry King, Adam Reed and Luke Hersheson on the trending hairstyles, cuts and colours to know and consider before you get back in the chair.

70’s layers, pixie chops and fringes

“After lockdown 3.0, people are going to be looking for a change,” says Larry King of Larry King Hair, who has perfected hair on the covers of Vogue, Vanity Fair and GQ and counts Gigi, Cara and Karlie as clients. Searches for mullet styles are up by 250%, pixie cuts are up 160% and curtain bangs for curly hair are up 190%. “Layers are going to come back and bobs will be an ongoing trend,” says Larry. “We will see the Pixie Chop again, but slightly more diverse, with a bit more length and a bit more softer at the back, or with a lot more length at the front like young Winona Ryder. It’s very wearable and adaptable. Make sure it works with your natural texture. If you want to change your style up without losing length – try a fringe!”

High definition hair, fresh blonde and balayage blurring

There’s been a 3200% increase in searches for light blonde hair and Adam Reed of Adam Reed London, L’Oréal Salon Partner and the hands behind the hair of A-lister Diane Kruger to designer Henry Holland says it’s the service we’ll all be running back for. “Blonde is going to have a moment for biscuity, caramel infused tones with the Bardot Blond to the (Instagram) Reel Blonde,” says Adam. “With Bardot Blond, think about that beautiful soft shade, it’s a nostalgic blonde. Think Debbie Harry. Reel Blonde, is about a vibrant, new transformation, like Billie Eilish. Next is the incredible Parisian ‘Balayage Blur’ that looks like you’ve been in the South of France. It’s a beautiful, natural colour that enhances your hair cut and skin tone. It’s about free hand painting the hair and blurring it from it’s natural tone through to a beautifully lightened color. It’s about healthy, glossy, shadowed roots and not being able to see the beautiful transformation, personalised for each individual. Healthy hair is something I always strive for and obviously your hairdresser can help you enhance that, which is exactly what ‘High Definition Hair’ does. It’s all about ultra shine and colour that really pops. It’s like lip gloss on the lips but for your hair and is the perfect add on service to see maximum effect with minimum effort.”

blankNatural texture, the Glam Shag and 90’s curls

Luke Hersheson, the author and hairstylist behind the locks of Sienna Miller, Victoria Beckham and Emma Watson says natural texture and early 90s curls are coming back. “There’s a feeling we’ve been over-tonging and overheating the hair,” says Luke. “Hair trends tend to follow cultural moments and because we’ve been forced into this weird period of lockdown, everyone’s embraced some form of naturalness from their hair, whether we’ve been forced into it or can’t be bothered. Out of that comes new moves, and this movement in the hair, and embracing your naturalness can be anything from air drying to re-educating your hair on it’s curls. I think we’ll be seeing a lot of 90s style curls; like Sarah Jessica Parker, Zendaya and Drew Barrymore,” says Luke. “I believe everything begins and ends with a great haircut. It’s even more so important with curly hair. ‘The Glam Shag’ is about bringing your natural movement out, like a Stevie Nicks vibe. The curls make it much more glamorous. Bobs aren’t going away. They’re so versatile, from the ‘Brit Bob’ – which is much more chopped up and raw, think Kaia Gerber – to the ‘French Bob,’ which is like a fringe with a bob, a bit shorter, with that Parisian nonchalance. Whether you want something polished or grittier, there is a bob to suit everyone.”
