You won’t believe it, but the house everyone is obsessed with in Netflix’s Master of None is actually a set

The gorgeous cottage we’ve all been drooling over is in fact the work of a very talented production designer.

The third season of Netflix’s Master of None has definitely got fans talking. However, it seems the most attention hasn’t been on the storyline, or even on Aziz Ansari taking a step back from appearing in the show (although he is still directing and writing). It’s the totally dreamy house that characters Denise and Alicia live in that’s stealing all the attention.

In the show it’s meant to be an upstate New York cottage, but fans have been shocked to discover that not only is the cottage not in New York state, it doesn’t actually exist at all.

The exterior shots are of a cottage in England, and all the interiors were constructed from scratch on a soundstage in the ExCel centre in London. And while creating sets for TV shows is nothing new, such was the attention to detail here, people were convinced that the show must have been filmed in a real house.

With wonky ceiling beams, cosy reading nooks, creaky floorboards and what feels like a lifetime’s worth of objects, books and art, many people took to Google to find out more about this beautiful house, only to find out that it was the work of production designer Amy Williams and her team.

She has shared pictures and videos from the set on her Instagram, giving us an insight into the incredible amount of work behind the scenes. Unlike some shows where each room is an individual set, this one was constructed as a whole house, which probably helps to explain why it felt so realistic on camera.

It also manages to truly look like a lived-in house, with a pantry full of food boxes, photographs hung on the wall, shelves overflowing with books and coats by the door. Williams also revealed that actor Lena Waithe loved the orange sofa in the living room so much, she bought one for her own home.

Writer and director Aziz Ansari decided not to star in this third series after controversy arose when he was accused of sexual misconduct in 2018. Instead, the series focuses on Lena Waithe’s character Denise, and her wife Alicia, played by Naomi Ackie.
