Driven by Adventure, inspired by Defender. In the third of this new travel series, we visit Donegal to uncover the region’s most road-trip-worthy, design-led destinations.
Where to stay
Breac House
In northwest Donegal, perched on a headland overlooking the sea, you’ll find the beautifully crafted Breac.House. A sustainable retreat with design at the forefront, owners Catherine and Niall wanted a space that oozed modern luxury, but was made from traditional materials. Their vision was executed by award-winning MacGabhann Architects alongside local craftsmen – think handmade furniture, local pottery and Ardara Quartzite quarried in South Donegal.
Each room has an outdoor space, where you can enjoy a fresh breakfast delivered to your door (they make all their bread and pastries in-house) while gazing out at the sparkling sea. Afterwards, borrow one of their bikes to explore a nearby beach or a yoga mat for a scenic session, before dipping into the wood-fired sauna, garden or seaweed bath to unwind.
“Breac.House brings together our love of all things Donegal,” says Catherine and Niall, “quality Irish design, real food, local heritage and, of course, the opportunity to explore the amazing beaches and mountains.”
Harvey’s Point
Known for its spacious, opulent bedrooms and award-winning cuisine, Harvey’s Point is an authentic hotel operated by genuine individuals, each driven by a sincere desire to ensure the happiness, relaxation, and pampering of their guests. Boasting breathtaking mountain and lake views, as well as beautifully designed interiors complete with wooden panelling, chandeliers and stunning artwork, the home away from home feel always ensures an unforgettable experience.
Rathmullan House
This Georgian family run country house is set in a picturesque corner of Donegal, along the shores of Lough Swilly, across seven acres of wooded gardens. Ideal for romantic getaways made for unwinding, or a family trip made for quality time, Rathmullan House was built in the 1760s and was tastefully extended over the last 250 years, with each room being uniquely decorated. The Cook & Gardener Restaurant is open nightly with a daily changing menu, and Batts Bar is perfect for snack lunches, pre-dinner drinks and cosy evening chats.
Where to eat
Fisk Seafood Bar
Some of the best seafood can be found in Downings at Fisk Seafood Bar. A cool and casual eatery named for co-founder Lina’s Swedish heritage (Fisk is Swedish for Fish), she opened the restaurant with her husband Tony, from Tyrone, back in 2018. They’ve been serving up simple, scrumptious seafood with applause from many who pass through their doors. Regulars love the fish tacos with buttermilk batter and house slaw, the smoked haddock with Panko breadcrumbs and the crab grilled cheese on freshly baked sourdough. And, with a view that overlooks Donegal Beach, there’s no better place to tuck into one of their delicious dishes.
The Olde Glen
One of Donegal’s oldest and most famous bars and restaurants, The Olde Glen oozes old world charm and character. After enjoying the rare ambience of the true Irish pub—complete with open fires, live music and plenty of craic—the aroma of the restaurant lures you in. Chefs Cormac Walsh and Ciaran Sweeney and their teams have created an incredible menu featuring the best hand-picked, locally sourced seasonal produce.
Lemon Tree Restaurant, Letterkenny
Established in 1999, Lemon Tree Restaurant is a family-run and Michelin recommended location that offers contemporary, seasonal dishes, in relaxed surroundings. Located in the heart of Letterkenny, along Donegal’s famous Wild Atlantic Way, their philosophy is simple: contemporary Irish cooking using the finest locally sourced ingredients. The goal is to showcase Donegal not only for its breathtaking scenery but also its world class produce.
Where to shop
Foam
Aptly found in the surf town of Bundoran, Foam is an ultra-cool space where top-tier coffee blends, seasonal food and ‘coastal culture’ collide. They spotlight local artists by stocking an array of trendy clothing (like artist-series t-shirts), ceramics and stoneware mugs, coffee-table books, Irish-made soy candles, woven towels and hemp teas, to name a few. Maker’s stories are displayed on their website too, so you can learn more about their featured brands. It’s the perfect place to pop in for a thoughtful gift, a unique souvenir or a gourmet cup of coffee to warm your bones after a chilly sea swim.
McNutt of Donegal
Marrying traditional craftsmanship with modern design, McNutt of Donegal is an Irish, third generation, family owned business creating homewares and fashion accessories using the world’s most luxurious wool and linen yarns. Drawing inspiration from the wild, rugged surroundings of Donegal, the brand is sustainable, unique, and utterly luxurious. From scarves and cushions to throws and wraps, you’ll find a beautiful addition to your home here.
Harbour Road
Located in Gaoth Dobhair, Harbour Road is a treasure trove for you and your home, and if you’re in the market for a beautiful gift for a loved one, this is where you need to go. From bunches of dried flowers, handmade candles and gorgeously illustrated cards, to stuffed teddy bears, ceramic mugs and picture frames, it’s easy to get lost in browsing and inevitably leave with a gift for yourself too.
