Finally! Beautiful and hard-wearing garden furniture for aesthetically-minded people

Finally! Beautiful and hard-wearing garden furniture for aesthetically-minded people

Canadell table, €919; Bona chairs, €194; Victora outdoor shelving unit, €148; all at Kave Home

Kave Home transformed Dominique McMullan's garden, and as a result, her summer. Enter long languid summer evenings on a patio to be proud of.

We’ve been living in our new build house for just over a year. Last summer the garden grew wild with long grass and a few fold up chairs, as we focused on the interior of the house and populating it with the basics like curtains and beds. I knew this summer we had to do something with the outdoor space, especially now that our three and one-year-olds were ready to play outside. Our garden is reasonably large for a new build, and has an especially fetching patio area, so this was where I was focusing on, but immediately came upon issues.

I have been fantasising about long summer evenings spent lounging in the garden – my boys playing quietly (!) while we have friends around for gin & tonics. Obviously, the reality is different, but I didn’t expect the garden furniture to be the issue. It turns out that 95% of the garden furniture out there is uncomfortable, or ugly, or both. I am not a fan of grey, imitation rattan and I could find little outside of this description that was not way out of our budget. I understand that Irish weather limits the materials you can rely on, but surely plastic furniture was not the only affordable option?

For weeks I searched in shops and online, my social media algorithm throwing everything at it, but alas nothing said practical and stylish — which is what I needed, and yes, wanted. After all, this was going to be a once-in-ten-years purchase, so it had to be right.

Then I stumbled across Kave Home. This is a furniture company from which I would happily decorate my entire house. Their pieces are functional, durable, stylish and timeless. They use natural materials where appropriate and there is a feeling of sunshine and lightness to each piece; perfect for an aesthetically-minded person who wants a beautiful space.

They don’t just do garden furniture, but it was the garden furniture that immediately drew my eye. I was searching for a big outside dining table (enough for all those gin & tonics) and the Canadell Table (€919) was everything I could have hoped for. Made from recycled teak (which tolerates humidity and damp) it is highly resistant and durable in outdoor spaces – perfect, in other words, for an Irish winter. What’s better, the wood is sourced from sustainable forests with controlled felling and each table comes with its own unique tones and textures, following the wood. The minimal lines and natural textures would look beautiful on any patio, but especially mine.

Next were the chairs, and the Bona aluminium garden chairs (€194) with solid teak wood armrests were a no-brainer. These aluminium chairs are light and stackable, meaning I would be able to store them easily during the winter. Of course the aluminium means they will last years with little maintenance, even in the Irish climate and most importantly, they are beautiful, fitting perfectly with the Canadell Table and comfortable to boot.

Finally, the pièce de résistance, the Victora Shelving Unit (€148). My revamped space has already encouraged me to get out and garden, and the Victora Shelving Unit provides the perfect display for the fruits of my labour. It is made from solid acacia wood with clear varnish for long term durability and resistance to UV rays and the wood is sourced from sustainable forests with controlled felling. It perfectly complements the Canadell table and Bona chairs, and can easily be scooched around the patio, depending on my mood.

From a wild and empty space, the Kave Home furniture has transformed my garden, and as a result, my summer. Those long languid evenings are now possible – all the while enjoying timeless design that I know will be a feature of my garden for years to come.
