by Sarah Finnan
31st Mar 2025

This week's round-up includes the film that won Kieran Culkin an Oscar, a true crime documentary about the Long Island serial killer and a film starring Michelle Williams in which she leaves her husband and begins to explore the full breadth and complexity of her sexual desires for the first time. Lots to look forward to!

MONDAY

The End, in cinemas nationwide

From Academy Award-nominated director Joshua Oppenheimer comes a poignant and deeply human musical about a family that survived the end of the world. An urgent and unforgettable cautionary tale, The End stars Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton), Michael Shannon, George MacKay and Moses Ingram.

TUESDAY

Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer, Netflix

Young women who worked in the sex industry were disappearing from New York City and Long Island and their families were desperate for answers. Then in 2010, female remains were found in the Gilgo Beach area of Long Island, leading to a string of additional discoveries at a virtual dumping ground steps away from New York’s busiest beaches. Despite all of this, the case of the “Long Island serial killer” remained unsolved for 13 years – until July 2023, when a major break came after corruption was rooted out within the police responsible for the case. From two-time Academy Award-nominated and Emmy-winning director, Liz Garbus comes the definitive look at the twists and turns in a case that dominated headlines and is still developing in real-time.

WEDNESDAY

A Real Pain, Disney+

The movie that essentially won Kieran Kulkin an Oscar for playing himself, A Real Pain was written and directed by Jesse Eisenberg and centres on mismatched cousins David (Eisenberg) and Benji ( Culkin) who reunite for a tour through Poland to honour their beloved grandmother. The adventure takes a turn when the odd couple’s old tensions resurface against the backdrop of their family history.

THURSDAY

The Bondsmen, Prime Video

Murdered bounty hunter Hub Halloran (Kevin Bacon) is resurrected by the Devil to trap and send back demons that have escaped from the prison of Hell. By chasing down those demons with the help and hindrance of his estranged family, Hub learns how his own sins got his soul condemned – which pushes him to seek a second chance at life, love, and country music

FRIDAY

Dying for Sex, Disney+

Dying for Sex is inspired by the story of Molly Kochan, originally shared on a Wondery podcast created with her best friend, Nikki Boyer. After Molly receives a diagnosis of stage IV metastatic breast cancer, she decides to leave her husband Steve, and begins to explore the full breadth and complexity of her sexual desires for the first time in her life. She gets the courage and support to go on this adventure from her best friend Nikki, who stays by her side until the very end.

SATURDAY

Four Mothers, in cinemas

Four Mothers tells the story of Edward (James McArdle), a novelist saddled with caring for his elderly mother (Fionnula Flanagan) who finally finds himself on the brink of literary success. Busy with the demands of his upcoming book tour, the last thing Edward needs is his friends leaving their mothers on his doorstep as they head off on an impromptu Pride holiday! Over a chaotic weekend, Edward has to juggle his burgeoning career with the care of four eccentric, combative, and wildly different ladies. Four Mothers is a tender and heartwarming comedy that is set to delight cinema audiences.
