34 chic coffee tables to create a focal point in even a small living space

As well as being an aesthetic choice, adding gentle curves or interesting texture, the right coffee table for your room can add storage or additional shelving.

Especially in a smaller space, you may think a coffee table is unnecessary, simply taking up floor space and becoming another thing to walk around.

But they can be a real focal point of any space, large or small – the key is in finding one that works for you. Their low, often softly curved designs are in fact quite unobtrusive to the eye, and prevent an open floor space from making a room look empty.

Practically, it’s nice to have somewhere to set a cup of tea or a magazine, while their low height can be perfect for kids to sit around when playing.

If you’re still concerned about space, there are lots of options, from glass designs that won’t block the light, to those with hidden storage, while nesting designs can expand and contract as you need. Here are some options available to shop now.

Sleek and simple

Keep things streamlined with a pared-back piece that adds a quiet design flourish.

Shelving and storage

Use built-in shelves to display favourite objects, while clever hidden storage might finally end the eternal question of “where’s the TV remote?”.

Transparent designs allow for maximum light flow, adding all the practicality while feeling unobtrusive even in smaller spaces.

Better together

Nesting tables are great for flexibility, taking up little space when stacked together, but can expand out for maximum surface area as needed.

Marvellous multitaskers

If you simply can’t dedicate the space to a table, opt for a footstool that can double as one when necessary. These versatile pieces can also act as extra seating when you have friends over.
