Dry January: 10 celebrities who don’t drink alcohol

With Dry January a popular topic of conversation, we take a look at 10 celebrities who gave up alcohol for good  — or never started in the first place

With all the talk of Christmas excesses and Dry January, alcohol is on our mind and not for its usual celebratory reason.

Many of us will be taking a look at our drinking habits following the party season. The symptoms of post-Christmas fatigue are affecting us all and though I am not a doctor, much of them can be attributed to alcohol.

When you think of celebrities you think champagne and expensive vodka, however many of the world’s biggest celebrities have taken the decision to abstain from drinking completely. The reasons for this vary from addiction stories to just not liking the taste, but it shows they are not all party animals.

Elsa Hosk

Recently, Victoria Secrets model Elsa Hosk reflected on her struggles with alcohol. She has been sober since she was 20 years old. In an Instagram Q&A, the Swedish native said that landing in New York at the age of 14 meant she was swept up in a chaotic lifestyle. “NYC was overwhelming and I got even more lost. It took me a while to realise all my problems started with me… I got sober and clean and learned I was an alcoholic and that there was a whole world out there that lived sober.

“I met some amazing people and friends and slowly found myself again… what followed because of that I would have never imagined. Grateful beyond words!”

Here are some other well-known individuals who made the decision to live life sober.

Blake Lively

The Gossip Girl actress has never tried alcohol, saying: “It’s genuinely something I have no desire for.”

Eva Mendes

In 2008, the Stitch actress entered rehab for substance abuse and has been sober ever since. In a cover story with Interview magazine, she said: “People have died, and I’ve lost friends too — even recently. So I can be a little sensitive on the subject.”

Lana Del Ray

The soulful singer struggled with alcohol addiction in her early teens and has been sober since the age of 20.

Calvin Harris

Although you may think a DJ by trade should enjoy the party lifestyle, Scottish DJ Calvin Harris has kept himself away from temptation, saying that alcohol makes him feel ill and that it was “affecting my brain in the worst way”.

Natalie Portman

The Oscar-winning actress drank in her college years, saying “I didn’t get flat-out drunk until I went to college. But I think that’s a good thing in many ways.” However, she has been a sober adult since.

Shania Twain

No wonder Shania is glowing. The country superstar has never drunk alcohol or smoked and is a dedicated vegetarian.

Bradley Cooper

The A Star is Born actor and director said in an interview with GQ that he knew he needed to stop drinking to keep his career intact, “If I continued it, I was really going to sabotage my whole life”.

Jennifer Lopez

The singer looks as good as ever and it could be down to the fact she doesn’t drink. In 2003 she told InStyle magazine that alcohol ruins her skin. We may have to take her advice.

Zac Efron

The actor quit drinking after an intense few years in his early twenties which ended with a stay in rehab. Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter in 2014, he said: “No matter who you are, you face challenges growing up… You go with your things, you learn, you have to. It’s impossible to lead an honest and fulfilling life as a man and not make mistakes and ‘fess up to them when you need to”.

Naomi Campbell

In a 2013 interview with Life & Style, the supermodel opened up about why she chose to stop drinking alcohol saying, “Not drinking makes me a lot happier”.
