Wimbledon Who’s Who

Wimbledon Who’s Who

See More Photos
Put some Pimm’s on ice. Wimbledon has kicked off so we’re getting ready for pleats and thwarted attempts at pronouncing Slavic surnames.

TWAG
That’s Tennis Wife and Girlfriend. The current TWAG Queen Bee is one Kim Sears, artist and partner of reigning champion Andy Murray. The TWAG usually has the type of job you dream about on your commute – artist (Kim Sears specialises in animal portraiture), philanthropic fund manager (Jelena Ristic, expectant parent alongside Novak Djokovic), Home and Away actress (Bec Hewitt, wife of Lleyton Hewitt)? The TWAG is likely friends with a Made in Chelsea alumnus, has a vaguely successful parent and dresses country club-wedding safe. Style icons include Kate and Pippa Middleton, Reiss mannequins and, sure enough, Kate Sears wore a white lace dress from the brand to watch Murray’s match yesterday. Commitment to meaningful gazing at the back-and-forth of a tennis ball and blow-dries essential.

Love Match
The Power Couple this summer are Maria Sharapova and Grigor Dimitrov. These tennis titans have been dating for a year and are a talented force to be reckoned with. Sharapova has one of the keenest brains for business off-court, having launched her own label, Sugarpova, and collaborated with Nike. She counts McQueen’s Sarah Burton among her fashionable friends. The Bulgarian Dimitrov (pictured above), meanwhile, is fresh from victory at the Aegon Championships and shaping up as one of Andy Murray’s biggest threats. He is also incredibly handsome. Dimitrov used to romance one Serena Williams and that former champion, whom Sharapova beat aged 17 to take her first Wimbledon title, referenced the ?black heart? of her former lover in a Rolling Stone interview. Forget the Rutshire Chronicles, SW19 needs an illicit series of novels – stat.

Tennis Whites

Despite the Czech athlete Tomas Berdych working some loud-yet-classy H&M florals at the French Open in Paris last month, the powers that be at Wimbledon are tightening the dress code this year. Players must adhere to ‘almost entirely white’ clothing while we have to trawl the stands for some glimpses of preppy summer fashion. With actors Jamie Campell-Bower and Douglas Booth already in attendance, we’re already guaranteed some sharp blazers. Whether or not the blue-suited bromance of Gerard Butler and Bradley Cooper will be reignited remains to be seen. In the meantime we’re headed to COS to nab this white sheer checked number for our courtside pretenses.

The Old Guard
Wimbledon season means Wimbledon retrospective. Relive Steffi Graf and Andre Agassi’s romance and incredible hair history. Marvel at how tennis courts – previously the preserve of bad boys and serial headband-wearers Boris Becker, John McEnroe, and Bjorn Borg – are now crowded with family men in the Roger Federer mode. Will the World’s Most Beautiful Couple, Enrique Iglesias and former tennis star Anna Kournikova, put in an appearance for old times’ sake?

And Some Pub Garden Trivia
Whenever someone rattles off that Andy Murray was the first Briton to win since Fred Perry in the 1930s, you say, ?Actually, four Britons had won between Perry and Murray. They were all women and the last one was Virginia Wade in 1977. Are you going to finish that bottle of Pimm’s??
