Rising hip-hop and rap artist Denise Chaila has released a new video for her single ‘Chaila’ – and it’s absolutely brilliant
In exciting music news, Irish rapper Denise Chaila has released a new video for her single ‘Chaila’.
The Zambian-born and Irish-raised artist has been making waves in the music industry, with her single ‘Copper Bullet’ being one of the standout releases last year.
She has already released two singles in 2020 with one being ‘Chaila’ and the other ‘Down’.
The video for ‘Chaila’ was directed by Mark Logan and produced by a Dublin-based collective, COLLECTiVE Films. The song is a representation and a repossession of identity. In the song, Chaila spells out her name and raps about the mispronunciations she has endured in her distintive hip-hop lilt.
Director Mark Logan told Paste Magazine that the inspiration for the video came “from the name ‘Chaila’ and its origin as well the actual beat of the track. At the beginning of the creative process, Denise told me that the name ‘Chaila’ for her is like a ‘self-invented nomadic clan’.
“It was a surname instated by her grandfather when he took his middle name as his last name after he left his hometown in pursuit of the woman he loved, who later became his wife and the mother of his children.”
