Watch: 12-year-old Allie Sherlock from Cork featured on YouTube’s top Irish videos of the year

YouTube published its annual list of Ireland’s top 10 trending videos for the past year on Thursday. So, what kept us glued to our screens? Three amateur Irish musicians made the list, with a video of 12-year-old Cork busker Allie Sherlock appearing on the Ellen DeGeneres show in the US taking the third spot. Her performance took the world by storm, and the 12-year-old, who hails from Douglas in Cork, first came to attention last June when a video she posted on Facebook of her busking on Dublin’s Grafton Street singing Ed Sheeran’s “Supermarket Flowers” went viral almost overnight.

She was then was invited to Los Angeles by American singer and producer Ryan Tedder from OneRepublic after he saw one of her videos on Instagram and following this, she appeared on The Ellen Show. Allie then announced she would sign a five-year, three-album record deal.

“He [Ryan Tedder] saw my video on Instagram and flew us over to collaborate. The Ellen Show had contacted us, I think two weeks before that, and we’re just doing some interviews over Skype and my dad told them that we were over in LA if they wanted me on,” she said on the Ray D’arcy show. She is seriously talented; you can watch her performance below.

In terms of other videos that made the list, an American boy yodelling in a Walmart store in the United States was the most watched video by users of YouTube in Ireland in 2018 (at just 12, he’s also amazing) and a wonderful version of Send in the Clowns by 81-year-old Evelyn Williams from Tallaght who wowed the judges on Ireland’s Got Talent was also a hit with viewers. Eurovision finalist Ryan O’Shaughnessy also featured as did the video from Kylie Jenner announcing the arrival of her daughter, Stormi. In sport, Jonathan Sexton’s last-minute drop-goal to secure a win against France in the first of this year’s Six Nations matches was in ninth place.
